Re: Tulrissian Unification IC

Post by Fialova »

Gildras narrows his eyes in annoyance as Valcus' tone becomes accusatory, but he remains silent as the man says his piece. After pondering the words for a moment, he finally responds, "Very well. I may not fully trust these performers, but you and yours are another matter. If you believe they are not a threat, but indeed a boon to your cause, then so be it."

The man turns to return to his post, before quickly turning back once more to face his fellow knight. "And do know that not all are of the same mind as the Warden. I may serve the man but I am not him, and don't think for a moment that I am as convinced of the necessity of his deceptions as he is. Something to keep in mind when addressing others in service of their lieges in the future, friend," he says, his words a stern expression of his offense to some of Valcus' own.

His own piece said, the man continues his march back to his post, motioning for the others manning the gates to raise the portcullis. From there the group is free to make their way back to their awaiting masses outside. A couple hours have passed since the group made their way in, and it is clear that the sight of you emerging safely from the city walls is a relief to many, chief of all Mayor Beasley.

"And the triumphant return. Or not so triumphant, I take it?" the man replies, as he spots the portcullis once more lowering in the distance. "And you've brought others with you, I see. I must say, a small part of me worried you'd encounter difficulties leaving me in charge of this... mob. Can't say I was relishing the thought."

Ghor stays quiet during the exchange with Gildras, standing behind Valcus and trying to look serious and trustworthy. A difficult task in brightly colored pants and no shirt, but serious, at least, is something the big orc has experience with. He gives Gildras a tight nod at the end, dropping the performing strongman from his voice to give a gruff and business-like "Thank you, Ser."

Valcus keeps his steady eyes on those of Gildras' as the man retorts words of irritation. He grimaces slightly, but understands. My words were unfair him, the knight agrees. But it does not matter. I am not here to make friends with every liegelord or man-at-arms. I am here to save those who cannot save themselves.

He nods at Ser Gildras with a solemn gaze as the latter moves back to his post. Turning back, Valcus shrugs to his allies and Mutar. "Well, seems we're free to go."

Trudging past the portcullis, he is unsurprised when it closes surreptitiously behind him. Valcus ignores the theoretical instance brought forth by Beasley, turning instead to extend a gesture toward Mutar and his wagons. "This is the Magnificent Mutar," the knight explains with a smile.

Mutar gives as much of a flourish as he is able from the seat of his carriage as the group approaches the caravan. "Aye, though when not performing it is fine if you simply call me 'Mutar,'" the man responds with a smile. "We will be joining you in your trek eastwards, along with some provisions we picked up in the city," the man responds.

"My my, the circus? What an... unexpected addition," Beasley responds, a smile on his face as he witnesses the brightly colored carriages emblazoned with imagery of performers and animals.

Some of the others look on with a mix of confusion and excitement as well, though most seem their usual mixture of worried and exhausted. As the knights and their new friends make their approach, Rhian nervously approaches Caelen. "A wnaethoch chi ddod o hyd i rywun i fynd â mi i'm teulu?" she asks.

"Aye, just Mutar it is," Valcus confirms with a nod and a smile, turning to Beasley. "Unexpected, yes. But not unwelcome. What safety we will be able to provide them will be returned in morale from their vivid presence."

The knight looks past the mayor for a moment, hoping to catch a glimpse of Ser Daria.

Caelen frowns as his new elven friend approaches him, fully aware that her journey home will take longer than expected with the situation in Red Bridge. Knowing it's best to be honest with the girl as to not get her hopes up, the elf says, "Mae'n ddrwg gen i, ond dwi ddim ofn. Mae'r ddinas ar gau i drip oherwydd rhyfel mân. Ond mae croeso i chi aros gyda ni am y tro. Rydym yn arwain at Menora yn gyntaf, ond bydd y Warden yn ein galluogi i basio drwy'r gogledd ar ôl ein dychwelyd. Gallwn eich helpu gartref yna."

"O," the elf girl responds, her face sinking a bit at the news. "Os nad yw'n faich, yna byddaf yn aros gyda chi. Ni chredaf y byddwn i'n ei wneud ar fy mhen fy hun," she adds. "Alla i gerdded gyda chi? Chi yw'r unig un y gallaf siarad â hi, mae'n unig ac yn ddryslyd pan nad ydych chi i gyfieithu."

"Far from unwelcome," the man responds to Valcus, a smile still plastered across his face. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a fan. I saw them - you - perform when I was but a lad. I assume the ringleader at the time was your father?" he says, now to Mutar.

"Most likely," says the Serranborn. "I've not been at it quite that long," he adds with a chuckle. "Perhaps once we've reached Menora you can relive your childhood and watch another performance. I understand you are short for time, though? Perhaps we should continue our conversation on the road."

"Always short for time," Valcus says with a sad nod. He blows his horn, signalling for the caravan to begin their journey. Let's hope we can get to Menora with as few losses as possible.

Taking a walk toward Ser Daria and the two commoners with her, the knight listens to them as he approaches.

Valcus
[SHOW]

As the man approaches he catches Daria giving some encouragement to the woman before patting the boy on the head. He is holding a small piece of food, and from the context it appears that she had just given it to the lad. The woman turns as she hears Valcus approach, and a slight smile that had been on her face fades back into its more neutral expression as they lock eyes.

"Everything seems fine, ser. I mean my Lord!" she says, giving a quick bow towards him. "Or as fine as can be expected, at least. Did your meeting go well?" The caravan begins its slow march around this time, and you and her move along with the rest of them.

Caelen
[SHOW]

The woman gives a slight smile, responding simply with, "diolch." The two begin to march with the others as the caravan begins to move, and not too long into the walk the familiar face of Kiki can be seen moving through the crowd towards the pair.

The young acrobat waves as she approaches, moving right up next to Caelen, before saying, "hey, whose your friend? She wasn't in the city with you lot, I figured all the big shots would have come in, yeah?" She glances over to Rhian, who looks a bit bewildered, but otherwise mostly uninterested in the woman's presence.

Elven Translation
[SHOW]

"thank you."

Drake
[SHOW]

The caravan begins to move, you now mostly in the lead with Valcus moving into the group to seek out Daria. The circus stays shortly behind you and the others, Mutar's wagon towards the front, and Karmin walks to your side.

"These folks you gathered are certainly an odd bunch," the mayor adds, speaking softly enough that his words won't reach the ears of Mutar or the others. "You trust them? They're good entertainers and all, but also foreigners."

Ghor
[SHOW]

"Never loses, eh?" comes the voice of Marga, who walks near to Ghor as the caravan begins to move. "I seem to recall many occassions where I beat your sorry ass in a fight," she says, slapping the man on the back and giving a hearty laugh.

"But nice to see your confidence paid off. They seemed taken enough with you to give us a chance, so I guess I should thank you for getting us out of that town. I was about to go crazy! Not to mention all those women giving me dirty looks. It's not my fault their husbands wanted to live a little!"

Caelen is astonished as the flirtatious circus performer approaches, though concedes that there's no hiding from her anymore. Turning between Kiki and the elf girl, he says, "This is Rhian. She was traveling with the group from Morrham, trying to get home to Oakengrove." Knowing of the girl's linguistic limitations, the elf adds, "She only speaks Elven though, so she probably won't be very talkative."

Valcus smiles as he watches the interaction between Daria and the young boy. He straightens up as she turns to him, matching her neutral demeanor.

"Ser is fine," the knight says with a shrug. "I suppose Lord is reserved for when I need to convince someone to our cause." Valcus sighs, still irritated by the meeting with the Warden. "To be honest -- not well. Red Bridge is locked tight against a possible siege from the Trelheimers. No room for our people, and the Warden cares little for the gravity of this war when he has his own -- no matter the scale. How goes it out here? I see morale is still holding," he says, nodding toward the mother and her child with a smile.

Caelen
[SHOW]

"Oh, interesting. How does someone survive in Tulrisse if they only speak elven? Seems a bit strange," the girl says, before turning to Rhian. She waves a bit to grab her attention, to which the elf gives a skeptical look, before saying, "Fi... uh, ffrind. Kiki. Iawn!" The elf's skepticism fades into a chuckle, before she responds, "ie, ffrindiau." She gives the serrean woman a smile back, who responds in kind.

"Always nice to make new friends," Kiki continues, turning back to Caelen. "Though that's about the extent of my elven. Maybe she will pick up some Tulrissian along the way!"

Elven Translation
[SHOW]

"I... uh, friend. Kiki. Okay!"

"yes, friends."

Ghor
[SHOW]

"Yes, Menora was not my favorite of places," says Afsheen, as he steps up to Ghor's other side.

"You're just upset that those folk are unimpressed with your magic," Marga says with a smirk.

"Well I certainly can't compete with what they're used to, it's true. What ladies are going to swoon at fire juggling when their husband studies at the tower? It's just not fair."

"Oh, boo hoo. One town where you aren't fawned over. It must be so hard on you," his lover adds, her smirk only seeming to grow at the jests. "I, for one, am happy to go back. Some of those magic men definitely know how to please a lady, even if they are a bit scrawny." Afsheen merely rolls his eyes in response.

Valcus
[SHOW]

"Yes, ser. Sorry, ser," the woman says, listening as he describes the events of the day. Once he is done, she looks noticeably less serious and more worried. "To think that Trelheim would continue an invasion when their very existence is threatened. I can only wonder what Lord Rautrel seeks to gain from such recklessness," she says, shaking her head in disbelief.

At the question of morale, she perks up slightly, though she still appears slightly somber. "The refugees are not in great shape, but their spirits are still relatively high. Most are quite grateful for your aid in such a dire time, going out of your way to escort them to safety. It is quite admirable if you ask me, ser," she adds, with a slight smile.

"Some are still in bad shape, though," she continues, the smile fading as quickly as it came. "If Menora is not to take them in I am not sure how far some of them will make it. Or how long their willpower will keep them going. I hope the Queen is as generous as she has been made out to be."

"You cite honor as the source of my intentions," Valcus says, shaking his head with a sad look. "If only. I've lost my home -- my family. My Lord. Everyone I knew is either gone or under foreign rule. No, I need a sense of purpose. We all do." He looks across the many bodies, eyeing each person individually as he goes. "If not for these people, then what is there to fight for?"

The knight takes a deep breath, looking back at Daria finally. "Sorry. It's been a difficult day. The Warden turning us down so decisively was hard to take. I'm afraid we are all betting on Queen Millicent. If not her, then Caelen and Lord Aerden had mentioned the possibility of pleading the dwarves for aid. What do you think of that?"

Caelen shrugs at Kiki's question, replying, "I guess they just speak elven where she's from." The elf boy can't help but chuckle at the circus performer's meager attempts at speaking his native tongue, though he's glad to see Rhian respond. Facing his elven companion, he adds, "Dyma Kiki, o'r syrcas troupe sy'n ymuno â ni tuag at Menora. Mae hi'n flin iawn, ond mae hi'n golygu'n dda."

Turning back toward Kiki, he responds, "Yes, we can only hope. I don't think she could survive alone out there for long without knowing the basics."

Valcus
[SHOW]

"I do not know anything about that, ser," Daria responds. "All I know about the dwarves is that they are wealthy and proud of their magic. Before now I'd never even ventured further than the Spear. I certainly hope they'd be willing to help us, but I hope that for everyone we approach," the woman responds, still somewhat somber.

"Sorry to hear about your home, ser," the woman adds after a brief pause. "I know everyone has lost something in this war, but at least most of the refugees still have their families. You might not think it admirable, or honorable as you say, to help them because it is all you have left. But to them, your help is everything. They would have nothing left if you and your companions did not come along to aid them, except a slow, agonizing death, from either starvation, the elements, or these invaders. You should not be so harsh on yourself," she adds, putting a hand on the man's shoulder and giving him another slight smile.

The moment ends when woman turns to face towards the front of the caravan as some shouting is heard coming from up ahead...

Caelen
[SHOW]

"Mae hi'n ceisio. Mae hynny'n fwy na'r rhan fwyaf o'r bobl eraill wedi gwneud. Rwy'n ei hoffi hi," Rhian adds with a smile, before continuing to look at her surroundings.

"I heard my name. I hope you were only saying nice things about me," Kiki says with a wink. "I guess she's lucky you were around, huh? I can only imagine how it must have been for her before. Probably a bit like Minh," she say. Seeing the confusion in Caelen's eyes at the mention of the name, she quickly adds, "another of the performers. Speaks no Tulrissian, and only very little Serran. I wonder what it must be like, being so isolated. Sounds horrible!"

The woman is then cut off by the sounds of shouting coming from ahead, and jumps up a bit to try to see where it is coming from...

Eleven Translation
[SHOW]

"She tries. That is more than most of the others have done. I like her,"

From ahead, shouting can be heard. It is not long before it becomes apparent that the sound is coming from the scout Drake had sent ahead. She seems scared and out of breath as she approaches, and the caravan halts at her approach.

After taking a few deep breaths, the woman looks up to the others at the front and says, "Danger ahead. Not an army. There is a large pack of wolves! They're feasting on some corpses, or at least they were when I spotted them. I can only hope they didn't follow me," the woman says, panting as she does so.

She's seen even less of the provinces than I, and yet she wields a wisdom twice her age. Valcus shares her smile, though it doesn't reach his eyes. It would do well to keep her around those of us committed to fighting this war.

"Thank you," the knight says to her, with a heartfelt nod. He opens his mouth to continue, but shouts ring out behind him and he stops.

Listening into the scout's report, Valcus can't help but feel compelled to action. "Ser Daria, I trust your words," he tells her closely. "But let us see if I can trust your blade as well. Ride with us ahead, where these wolves feast upon the bodies of our brethren."

The elf's eyes widen as the scout approaches with news of wolves, knowing that the caravan is full of some of the most vulnerable. Turning to Rhian, he says, "Bleiddiaid. Arhoswch gyda mi neu Kiki. Byddwn yn eich cadw'n ddiogel."

"Yes, sir!" Daria responds, giving Valcus a quick salute and a nod, before following after the man. Once no longer surrounded by civilians she makes sure to unsheathe the larger of her two swords, sticking close by Valcus and the others, ready to follow their commands.

"Bleiddiaid ar y ffordd?" Rhian says, her eyes showing her shock at the news. "Beth allai eu gorfodi i wneud hynny? Dydw i erioed wedi adnabod y bwystfilod i fentro ger ymyl y goedwig, heb sôn am ffordd y tu allan i'r orsaf." She looks around, clearly nervous, but relaxes a bit at Caelen's assurances.

"Uh uh! I heard you say my name to her, I'm not going anywhere near those things," Kiki says, looking a bit frightened, and shaking her head rapidly. "Fighting some highwaymen is one thing, but roving wolves?!"

Marga sighs and looks to Mutar at Ghor's words, hoping for some guidance from the man. He remains silent for the moment, himself looking to Drake and Valcus for their orders. Minh, hearing Ghor's call, comes to the man, and nods as she begins to help him. "¿Lo que pasa? ¿A la batalla?"

Encounter 10

Minh nods to the orc and removes her blade from its scabbard, quickly rushing after the others as they head towards up the road. Daria follows behind as well, her on sword at the ready.

As the group makes their way down they can begin to hear the sounds of their prey before they can see them. After a few moments of rushing forward, and after cresting a small incline in the path, they see ahead of them a wagon and the pack of wolves. They appear to be feasting on something, likely the bodies of whoever once owned the wagon.

Initially the creatures pay you no mind, but once close enough you spot a massive wolf, and it spots you as well. This larger wolf stands from its feast and faces you, letting out a piercing howl, and the others follow suit.

Watching the wolves stride forward as soon as the party is spotted, Caelen draws a pair of arrows and sets his sights on the beast harassing the young lord. He dispatches them swiftly, though only one finds purchase in the wolf. Why can't these wolves be normal and just hunt deer?

Sensing a window of opportunity, Valcus makes a rush toward one of the wolves that had brought Lord Aerden to the dirt. My turn. Bringing his bastard sword down, the knight rakes the beast's backside, maiming it.

With the orc surrounded and beset upon by a number of the wolves, Valcus shouts through the din of combat. "Strongest man alive, eh?" he taunts him, eyes still on the beast in front of him. "Prove it to me!"

Hardly rattled by the wolves knocking him around, Drake stands to and cleaves his longsword in a wide angle. The swing catches the wolf Valcus had harried in the snout, another in the shoulder.

The combination of attacks from the three men leave one wolf dead, another very near death as well, but the beasts don't go down without a fight. As the wolves continue to advance and attempt to surround the party, Caelen dispatches another arrow into his quarry, bringing its life to an end. Not wasting a moment, he fires another arrow towards another one the beasts. The sooner we bring these things down, the better.

With the orc still surrounded, Daria strides forward. Empowered while nearly surrounded herself, she unleashes a powerful strike toward the same wolf her elven companion hit.

The one remaining seem to take Drake up on his offer, the bulk of them focusing their attention on the man. A cacophony of snarls and the bite of steel on flesh has filled Valcus' ears, but he moves in sight of his objective. In his brashness, a wolf snaps at his side, but he shrugs it off with a wince.

"Ghor!" the knight cries, catching the risen orc's attention. "The big one! Now!"

Bringing his blade down with wicked force, Valcus cleaves through its flesh, breaking rib bones. At the same time, Ghor manages a massive, splitting blow to its skull, leaving the huge canine dazed and bleeding profusely.

Valcus pulls his blade free. "Again!" he shouts, landing two heavy-handed chops at the beast in quick succession. The orc follows up with a killing blow that all-but-severs the wolf's head from its shoulders.

Important Features:
[SHOW]

Combat Superiority: You gain a bonus to opportunity attacks equal to your Wisdom modifier (+2). An enemy struck by your opportunity attack stops moving, if a move provoked the attack. If it still has actions remaining, it can use them to resume moving.

Combat Challenge: Every time you attack an enemy, whever the attack hits or misses, you can choose to mark that target. The mark lasts until the end of your next turn. While the target is marked, it takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls if its attack doesn't include you as a target. A creature can be subject to only one mark at a time. A new mark supersedes a mark that was already in place. Whenever an enemy marked by you is adjacent to you and shifts or makes an attack that does not include you, you can make a melee basic attack against the enemy.

Encumbered Speed: You move at your normal speed even when it would be reduced by armor or a heavy load. Other effects that limit speed (such as difficult terrain or magic) affect you normally.

Bow Expertise: You gain a +1 feat bonus to weapon attack rolls that you make with a bow. In addition, you gain a +1 bonus to the damage roll of any weapon attack you make with a bow against a single creature that is not adjacent to any other creature.

Stand Your Ground: When an effect forces you to move -through a pull, push, or a slide-you can move 1 square less than the effect specifies. This means an effect that normally pulls, pushes, or slides a target 1 square does not force you to move unless you want to. In addition, when an attack would knock you prone, you can make a saving throw to avoid falling prone.

Heavy Blade Expertise: You gain a +2 bonus to all defenses against opportunity attacks.

Shield Push: If you hit a foe with an attack granted by your Combat Challenge class feature, you push the target 1 square after dealing damage.

Resilience of Stone: You can use your Second Wind as an immediate interrupt when damaged by an attack.

The three men, in their frenzy of blows, make quick work of the largest of the beast as soon as it enters the fray, though not before it lets out a loud howl, much like it had at the beginning of the fight. In response to this howl, two more of the smaller creatures appear off in the distance, before quickly rushing at the party. In a flurry of motion, Ghor and Minh find themselves joining Daria on the ground, and Caelen finds that he is no longer at a safe distance from wolves' claws.

Caelen recoils as a wolf approaches and slashes at him. The elf draws his bow and slings an arrow into the near wolf before making a retreat further from the beast. Feeling a sense of bravado combined with fear, he shoots another pair of arrows, yet only one meets its mark.

No, I'm not going through this again, he thinks, recounting his earlier experience with wolves. Eager to put this wolf down as soon as possible, he tries twice more to put the wolf down but fails once again, his desperation leaving him vulnerable.

Seeing his new orcish friend surrounded and beset upon by wolves, Valcus slams the pommel of his blade against his shield in frustration. He lets out a wordless warcry into the air, turning on the spot toward the cluster of enemies. Leaving himself open without care, the knight charges forward and rams one of the wolves to the ground with a powerful shield bash.

"Ghor! On me!" he cries. The orc slips through unscathed, repositioning next to Valcus. It's time we end this.
