The Land of Revi — IC

Post by Fialova »

Image
Tucked deep into a dark, dusty shelf in the back of the library, you stumble upon a dusty old tome that seems to have not been disturbed in ages. Cobwebs cover most of the shelf, which you wipe away as you pull it from its now-pristine slot. Turning it over in your hands, you read the title, “The Land of Revi,” and open to the inside cover. It creaks and feels as if it might break if moved too much or too quickly, but you manage to open to the first page and find the following message:

“This is a true history of the once-flourishing land of Revi, as recorded by Pentius of Cydonia.”

You’ve seen this name several times, and the man seems to have been a prolific author in times long past. While you know not of any land by the name of Cydonia, and you have yet to read a tale of his detailing anything resembling a history of real events, you know his stories to be as colorful and entertaining as even the best modern tales of daring and adventure. You turn the page and continue to read...

It has been a multi-day journey since you and the rest of the Cohort have had a job, and coin is beginning to run low. You arrived last night in the small town of Vesarne, tired, hungry, and in desperate need for work. The captain awoke first, so you noticed, as he was already gone from the inn when you shuffled out to meet the day. Imhe left shortly after, intent on finding a new task and more coin.

At around noon, the two of them both return, excited about a new lead. The group of you are hastily gathered together and told to follow to the nearby estate, owned by the local Jenore - Gavo Moltove - and his family. You are told that your new job will be to escort his family all the way to the city of Anfeli for the upcoming Calling of the Heir, and the pay promises to be quite substantial for such an otherwise straightforward escort job. Hope shines across the faces of your companions as you head towards the manor house to meet your new wards.

"We're told the Jenore himself is already in Anfeli, so we will only be escorting his wife and children," Hara says, continuing his previous explanation of the job you've been hired for. "I've spoken with her, she is a lovely woman. Quite devout, and convinced one of her children will be chosen to be the next Jenorim. That's probably why the pay's so good," the man continues, with a large grin.

The group of you have now been walking for several minutes since leaving the inn, and currently find yourselves nearing a large estate in the distance. The road on either side of you is lined with olive orchards, which you assume to be the local crop of choice for Vesarne. You pass the occasional cart of produce or farmhand on foot, finding them polite but generally in a hurry to get to where they are going. The estate in the distance seems more modest than many of the Jenore's estates that you've seen before, especially those of you who've spent time in larger cities, but it looks to be substantial compared to the otherwise meager homes of the villagers and farmers of this agricultural region.

"There are not too many of them, and most of them are young, so we need to be on our best behavior and take this job seriously," Imhe responds, her tone and the smirk on her face seeming to contrast with her words. "We shall be judged harshly by the Moltove children for our actions and attitudes, so we do not want to face their wrath if we are to fail in our duties."

Hara rolls his eyes at Imhe's jest, but responds all the same. "We may only be escorting a mother and her children, but we should still treat this job like any other. After all, the Calling is sure to draw all sorts to the city, not just those of divine lineage. Who knows who, or what, we'll encounter on the roads ahead?"

Lyseros spends much of the early morning simply basking in the warm sunlight and watching the village's denizens come and go. The smaller villages always offered him a quiet reprieve, often having little need for his more involved skills in their uncomplicated lives. Perhaps they've a handsome farmhand who's finds his faith lacking, hm? He sighs, perking up as Hara returns with news of a lead, a delighted smirk spreading over his pretty face. It's been some time since this sort of escorting... A pleasant change of pace.

He calmly gets up from his seat on the ground, gingerly stretching his body to follow their leader. "Perhaps she's right, and we'll go down as those who escorted and safely delivered the future Jenorim to his peoples. Or perhaps not, and we'll enjoy some wine on her coin, yes?" He wears a contented grin as they step through the village, eyeing the farmhands as they pass for any he deems worthy of a more holy experience on his behalf.

His grin quickly cracks into a subtle smirk at Imhe's quip, letting out a slight chuckle. "Children have ever been the sharpest critics. The amount of priestesses I've seen in tears from their painfully-accurate commentary... Let us proceed with caution, yes?" He nods along to Hara, though, still understanding the importance of such a contract. "Of course, the least savory will no doubt prey on all the travelers. But Ervemnon will guide us true."

After a lazy morning of working on a new song, Stolos perk up seeing Hara and Imhe return. Finally a little excitement around here. Well if this woeful excuse for a town has any excitement to give that it, he thinks, eager to not just earn some coin but also to do something after an uneventful few days.

Not quite the epic quest I envisioned, but coin is coin, the musician thinks as the Cohort leaders reveal the escort job ahead of them. "Either outcome sounds good to me. The former would make for the better poems and songs though," Stolos says, agreeing with Lyseros. "The people tend to prefer drinking a good wine rather than just hearing about it."

He smirks at Imhe's joke, but nods along at Hara's word. He is right. The high number of travellers will surely bring the bandits out from the thickets and caves they call home. Hopefully an armed cohort will be enough cause for them to pick other targets, he thinks, uneasy at the prospect.

"It'll be nothing the brave men and women or the Orliuci Cohort can't handle," he adds triumphantly.

Atropos listens to the movement in the hall. Hopefully the lead is good, for the captain to be up so early.. He spends the rest of the morning writing and reviewing notes, preparing spells, and enjoying the quiet before everyone else gets up. What a lovely sunrise today. he muses to himself, drinking in the cool dawn air.

His eyes lift from his book when Hara and Imhe enter the common room Atropos had relocated to, and he listens intently as they explain the job. The lead is good indeed. He tucks another mark in his book to save his place and closes it, setting it in his pack before quietly bracing himself to stand. "Truly, the cruelty of children knows no bounds," he says with a wry smile. "How far is Anfeli from here again?" he asks as they approach the manor.

Deimos spends much of the morning taking to caring for his gear - polishing his shield, and sharpening his sword carefully. He sighs, trying to ignore the rumbling of his stomach as it cried out desperately for food - Something that by now he should be used to, but isn't.
Hara's been gone for a while. Did something go wrong? He thinks after some time, before suddenly noticing Hara's return.

Deimos stays quiet, hearing Hara and Imhe's new job for them. He hesitates, tightening his wrist brace as a brief moment of anxiety springs over his face. The Calling? We're going to Anfeli?... I've avoided this for so long... is it time? He thinks to himself before he brings himself back to the present. "To Anfeli? That should be easy enough." He follows quickly with the cohort, making sure his gear is properly and safely strapped to himself. He looked up as the estate came into view and thought back to where he had grown up, the small plot of land his parents farmed on, barely even owned, and wondered how any one person could afford such land. He hesitates as well at the thought of how cruel children can be and glances over at Atropos before continuing. "An easy job and on to greener pastures, as they say. More jobs, more money. More opportunities." He smiles at his companions.

This morning Dravos quickly finishes his daily routine of washing, breakfast, mending his clothes and preparing his gear.
After this he spends the morning helping out the less experienced members of the cohort, waiting for Hara to return with news.
"Kids and ladies? I'll keep an extra eye out for their safety." Dravos says in calm manner.

"Well, it's good you're all excited for it," Hara responds, offering the group a warm smile as they discuss the job to come. "It promises to pay well, and we will be ending the job in a much larger city, so it seems like things are looking up!" he continues, clearly excited for their future prospects once the job is done. "And as you said, if one of them is indeed divined, then only greater fame and fortune to come."

"Oh, about a two or three day journey on foot, depending on the weather," Imhe responds, as Atropos asks about the distance from here to the regional capital. "Though I imagine an extra couple days with this lot. Children are not known for their endurance, nor their willingness to follow orders. They are truly a blessing and a curse," she continues, maintaining the same faux serious tone as before with the last words. "May they bless us with their patience and understanding, so none of us want to pull our hair out after this trek is over."

Another few minutes pass as you make your way to the gates of the estate, which are made of sturdy lumber, likely sourced from the olive trees that no longer had anything to produce. The rest of the walled exterior of the estate is made from a combination of brick and formed cement, encompassing a sizeable area immediately before you. Though you can no longer tell from up close, from a distance you could see that several buildings of various sizes can be found within.

One of the doors of the gate is ajar, allowing enough width for a person to pass through, though not enough for you to see much within. As you near the gate itself, a man steps out from the gap, clearly having heard your approach. He looks to be fully within his middle age, with deeply tanned skin and long greying black hair tied behind his head. His robes and necklace suggest that he is likely a priest, which his aged and calm demeanor only seem to further support. A scar across his right eyebrow suggests that this might not have always been the case.

The man approaches slowly, eyeing each of you as you stop before him. His stern look does not reveal his thoughts, though his words quickly do. "You are the ones the Lady Moltove has hired to be her escorts?" the man asks, raising an eyebrow as he glances one more over the group of you. "I cannot say that I see her reasoning, but perhaps you are more skilled than you appear," he continues, eyeing Atropos in particular with his final words.

A priest greeting visitors? I thought this an estate not a temple, Stolos thinks as the scarred priest talks.

"We are indeed! You stand before the great Orliuci Cohort. You have my assurances we are the perfect escort for our young would-be Jenorim," the performer says boldly, stepping forward. "What we may currently lack in prestige and renown can be rectified with time, all we need are the chances to show our quality," he continues, theatrically grasping the hilt of his sword.

"I see," Atropos replies to Imhe. "I am sure they will be as attentive and well-behaved as kittens."

Atropos listens to the man speak, and for a split second his eyes go cold at the pointed remark, but its gone in a blink. "Of course, Father, appearances aren't everything." he says cordially, after Stolos finishes, glancing at the scar on the man's face. "We've barely met, after all."

Lovely. Atropos thinks to himself. But, I understand his concern.

What a rude man. Dravos thinks, while forcing a polite smile.
"Thank you for your kind concern." Dravos says, hoping this priest makes himself scarce soon.

Deimos nods attentively, listening to Hara and Imhe's words. He looks up in time to see the priest walk out to greet them and is momentarily perplexed, but did not let the look stay for long. His body stiffens up at the man's pointed words, and he steps forward, just barely blocking Atropos' body to put himself between the two. I thought priests were supposed to be more polite.

Deimos clears his throat, and offering the man the politest smile he could manage; "We are more than capable of escorting the good lady, and her children. May Ervemnon grace your steps, sir." and after giving the man a strong stare, he gives a bow.

Lyseros eyes the priest curiously, if not with a slight disdain over his obvious slight towards his companion. Such stuffiness is why I sought out on my own to begin with. To see it even here is disappointing. He flashes a polite, if not vaguely passive-aggressive, smile to the priest. "Ervemnon would surely not have guided me to these fine companions if they were not worthy. Surely he led us to this fated meeting as well," the young consort says as the social dance of dealing with the priesthood comes rushing back to him. Well, Hara led us here, but perhaps Ervemnon played a small part as well.

"Regardless, I am certain you'll find us more than capable," he says confidently, channeling his experiences with both sorts of clients in his tone.

The man listens without interruption, his skeptical glance taking in each of you in turn. At last when Lyseros speaks, his eyebrows raise in surprise, though quickly resuming their furrowed form.

"It is as my cohort speaks," Hara adds. "Our capability should be without question. Lady Moltove and her children will be kept in complete safety on our way to Anfeli."

Imhe's posture straightens as the man's gaze falls upon her. "We shall be their shield."

The man harrumphs, though he does eventually grant the captain a nod. "I hope for all of our sakes that you speak the truth. These are no simple travelers you will be guarding." He steps back from the gap in the gateway, his hands clasped behind his back. "Very well, I've detained you long enough. Welcome to the Moltove Estate," he says, beckoning you toward him. "You may call me Ereden. Please follow me." He turns on a heel and begins to walk.

Hara and Imhe step through the gate, followed by the rest of you. The interior of the walled estate stretches ahead, and you can now see a clear view of the several buildings inside. A manor rests on a raised hill, flanked by what appears to be a small temple and a roofed stable. The manor looks ancient, though well-maintained and most likely recently painted. Built halfway into the hill, its wooden and plaster construction reaches up three stories to a sloped, paneled roof. Leading up to the manor is an expansive garden, with many fruit trees, flower patches, and a few hedged spaces separating them.

To the right, the temple is relatively modest — were it in a town. While the existence of temples in one's own residence is not unheard of it, it is certainly rare. Above the solid, wooden doors is a fresco, painted to show Ervemnon's divine vision of Revi.

The stables are mostly empty, only a few horses and a spare mule being the only occupants.

"I've never seen such wealth before," Polinos says quietly as you walk. "Much less the personal estate of a Jenore."

Imhe shrugs, a smirk forming on her face. "You get used to it."

Deimos wonders how this priest could think they thought of these people as anything less than important cargo- the next potential Jenore is not something that happens every day.

He shrugs it off however as he merely follows Hara and Imhe inside, keeping an eye on Ereden for a decent chunk of the walk until he hears Polinos' words, and he looks up... nodding and taking it all in. "It truly is a sight." He says with a soft smile.

I understand his skepticism, in how some custodians can be over-protective of their wards, but this seems slightly excessive. Atropos muses to himself as he follows with the group. Surely our qualifications were satisfactory, else we would have never gotten even this far. To what end is he--

His thoughts are interrupted briefly by Polinos' comment, and he gently nods in agreement. "I have not had a chance to see it up close before." He murmurs back. "But, she does have a point. We'll surely have more opportunities like this in the future." He doesn't say it with the confidence some of the others would, but he would rather say that out loud than some of his more uncertain thoughts.

Lyseros gives a content smile as the priest finally yields, allowing them entry to the estate. Thank Ervemnon... If I'd had to start laying on the charm. I'm not sure I'd even be capable with such a man. He studies the older priest's face a moment. Although the scar gives him a sort of rugged look, I suppose. He mentally shrugs to himself, following the lead into the estate. His smile furthers, almost being reminded of his would-be home in Efeore. Theirs was larger, but less of a garden. Yet they had the lake.

He lets out a slight chuckle at the awe his companions seem to be feeling, flashing a quick smirk. "Perhaps we should pay Efeore a visit when next we're able. Imagine dozens of these along the lake, and then you remember they're the second homes of the Jenore."

Stolos chuckles at Polinos' awe. "If one of the children does indeed before the Jenorim, they will likely feel like their new home as you do about this one," he says, following the group through the estate. "The capital is said to be quite impressive."

He nods. "It is a shame, that the most beautiful homes are often only meant for the richest folk, though I have traveled quite far and wide... and I can promise, some of the most beautiful places in the world that I have seen have had little to no interaction by man's hand." Deimos says, dropping his voice a little bit, still staring up in awe slightly at the home.

"Really?" Polinos asks Deimos, his face a mixture of surprise and wonder. "I should like to see them some day."

The chatter is cut short as you near the gardens, a sudden shriek piercing the quiet estate. Passing a hedge, you find a long stretch of grass inhabited by a few new faces. A toddler smiles as you appear, repeating a shriek — though clearly one of joy. She hobbles toward you on the grass, while a preteen girl chases behind her and scoops her up. The two watch you with wide eyes. Beyond them, a teenage boy sits at a small outdoor table with an older woman, the latter of which stands up to meet you.

"Children, please mind your manners," the mother calls out, her voice sincere yet strict.

"Yes, yes," Ereden says, gesturing calmly toward the two girls. "Let us meet your guardians in the sunroom, shall we?" His voice is much softer, and the preteen girl nods excitedly, carrying her younger sister off toward the others. The teenaged boy watches you with a lingering stare before they turn and head for the manor's front doors.

Ereden backpedals, still leading the way while facing you. His gentle candor is gone as quick as it had appeared, and he meets your eyes like those of a hawk. "As discussed with the captain, the Jenore and his host have already arrived in Anfeli days before, so I'm afraid this shall be a less-than-formal meeting as we might have hoped. Still, it shall be important for you to meet who you shall be escorting. Please, follow me."

He leads you up the stonework stairs to the front doors, one of which has been left open. You follow him inside, finding a large central parlor with a grand staircase before you, two doors off to your left, and an archway to your right. Past the archway, you see a windowed room, with thick curtains that have been pulled back to let streams of light in. He leads you into this sun room, which is rather long and decorated with a pair of long benches that overlook the side of the estate. There is a large fireplace on one end, and a long bartop opposite the windows. The Moltoves are seated as you enter, but they stand at your approach.

"Welcome to our estate," the mother says warmly, stepping forward. "I have heard many things of your cohort, Captain Harakim."

"Oh?" Hara responds, his head tilting slightly as a smile grows on his face. "Great things, I do hope. We certainly aim for such."

"Great things, indeed." She returns his smile. "I am Lady Moltove, but you may call me Oradia. In Gavo's absence, I lead our family affairs around the estate. Though I am oft handing the reins to our firstborn, Wahir."

The young man nods. "Pleased to make your acquaintance." He stands tall, with hands behind back — similar to Ereden.

"Can I try your sword, mister?" the preteen sister interrupts, who has made her way beside Stolos. The toddler stands beside Atropos, looking up at him with a finger to her lips in deep thought. "Mama, why does he look like that?"

Deimos watches, mildly amused at their excitement. Deimos looks up at the woman who addressed herself as Oradia, and gave her a polite bow. Deimos glanced around at the three young ones, before looking back at Wahir. He tries to ignore the toddler's question as he speaks up; "Much responsibility hangs on your shoulders, I suppose. I know a little of such things." He chuckles slightly under his breath before looking back up at Oradia. "Have they been to Anfeli before? Are they prepared to travel?"

Lyseros conceals a smirk behind a confident grin as they meet the family they are to be escorting, trying to hold back a chuckle out of the coincidence. As I did say, the sharpest critics, and the most curious sort. This will surely be an interesting escort. He had grown used to the antics of children from his earlier days in the temple, but it had been some time since he last felt the chaotic energy of youth. The wine shall surely pour after this job, no matter how it goes. We will surely need it.

"A pleasure," Lyseros says with a warm smile, bowing politely as the Lady and her son introduce themselves. "You've a lovely estate, Oradia." I could see myself basking in the morning's sun here, sipping on fine cordials. A splendid thought, if out of reach for now.

So these are to be our charge? Stolos thinks, looking over the family now they are all assembled.

The minstrel gives a nod in greeting to both Oradia and Wahir, before being alerted to the presence of the younger girl besides him.

He smirks at her words, grasping the hilt of his blade and drawing it with a flourish. "Here," he says lowering the blade and turning it to offer it to the girl hilt first. "Be careful. It's a fine blade that has seen me through many a battle."

"It's a pleasure." Dravos chimes in with the others.
Giving a blade to a girl? Indoors, with her mother right there, idiot. Dravos thinks.
Before the girl can grab the weapon, Dravos snatches the hilt of Stolos blade, and uses his leverage to sheathe it.
"I believe that's enough of a show, Stolos." Dravos whispers staring daggers at the performer. Then, to not seem like too much of a killjoy, Dravos whispers to the girl:
"Later, and not inside, mylady."

Stolos initially resists Dravos' attempt out of reflex but quickly surrenders, letting the man sheathe the weapon, not wanting to get on the man's bad side.

"As you wish," he replies matching the man's hushed tone, although he can't help but smile as Dravos then promises to the young girl. Not such a bore after all.

Atropos follows into the room, watching Ereden, before looking to each of the children and their mother. Good, they are not so young as to need constant attention, with the exception of the youngest, but she can be minded by her siblings, or her mother. he thinks to himself, only half-noticing as the child walks up to him, until she asks her question.

Atropos blinks once, taken slightly aback by the sheer forwardness, before recovering into a gentle smile. "Well, young lady, some people just look different." He says, "Don't worry, I am alright."

He looks back up and gives a slight bow to Oradia and Wahir. "As my companions have said, it is a pleasure to meet you. And compliments to your gardener, the orchard is beautiful."

Oradia blanches at the child's question, though eventually smiles at Atropos' courteous response. "Thank you," she says, looking to both he and Lyseros, nodding as they compliment the grounds. "It really is a sight this time of year, no? Ervemnon has blessed us, he has. Speaking of, you've already met Ereden, my brother, and both caretaker and tutor for the children. And now, you've also met my daughters: Mina and Avalla, the youngest. They are quite a handful at times, though I am sure you will know that just as well as I do in a few days' time. Girls, with me, please."

Mina frowns as Stolos' blade is whisked from her outreaching grasp, but her eyes narrow with a mischievous brightness to them at Dravos' words. She nods, before picking up her younger sister and returning near her brother and mother.

"We've been to Anfeli before," Wahir says, cutting in to answer Deimos' question. "Well, I have. It will be my sisters' first time."

Ereden nods. "We have readied a wagon, pack animals, supplies, medicine... enough to get us there and back and then some. It shall be a comfortable and safe ride."

Talk about easy money, Stolos thinks as he hears how well prepared the family are for their journey.

"I fear your comfort will be determined by your wainwright, but we shall ensure your safety," Stolos says to Wahir and Oradia after Erden's words.

"Indeed, I'm quite envious that you may enjoy such sights whenever you please. His blessings are truly bountiful," Lyseros responds with a genuine smile, seeing no reason for showmanship and flummery among the current company. He raises an eyebrow as the priest is introduced as the woman's brother, his prior behavior making more sense suddenly. That would explain his degree of protectiveness. He has a more invested stake in their safety than any other priest.

He nods to Stolos' words though, hoping to once again reassure the family. "Yes, your safety and peace of mind will ever be our priority."

Deimos chuckles at the boy's swift reply. "Then I'm sure you'll have many insights on the city that you can tell us about on the way there." He said with a soft smile. "I am ready to take my leave when everyone else is, I'm ready to be on the road again."

Atropos gives Oradia a smile as she calls the young girl back, as if to say I have heard it many times, it is alright.
His eyes widen slightly, Ah, her brother. That explains it all. before nodding at Ereden. "Well, then I will give you my compliments directly. Your care is readily apparent, and I appreciate the effort you have put in."

He glances at his companions briefly, before turning his attention back to the captains and the nobles, "Are there any other preparations to be made, anything specific we need to know or discuss before we embark?"

Dravos nods add Stolos. And quickly winks at the young girl in reply to her mischievous glint.
Dravos then turns around and asks: "Anything you need, captain?"

Wahir's so-far placid face forms a wry grin at Stolos' jest, though the two elders ignore it. He turns back to Deimos, nodding. "Yes, I'd like that."

Ereden shakes his head at Atropos. "No. We are ready. I shall call the servants to order." The priest steps away with haste.

Hara smiles at Dravos, shaking his head similarly. "Then we are ready as well. Cohort, with me!" He turns back to Oradia with a gracious bow. "We shall see you shortly, then."

Following Imhe's lead, you leave the Moltoves in the sunroom for now and head back out the way you came toward the manor's main entrance. The Vice Captain brings you around the side of the expansive home, past the temple, to another cluster of buildings — these ones considerably less extravagant that the ones in the front. To the right is a granary with two tall, narrow silos and a few bundles of drying hay sat against the brickwork. To the left there is a squat, wooden building that you presume must be the servants quarters. In the middle is a large, covered shed of sorts, in front of which the wagon has been prepared.

The wooden cart itself is large and well-built, with four sturdy wheels. The top of it is covered with a thick, cloth tarp to protect the Moltoves from rain while ensuring visibility for those seated. As you arrive, Ereden finishes harnessing the horses to the front of the cart before climbing up into the driver's seat. A pair of servants appear from the stables with two packmules, saddled with large bags containing supplies and equipment for the days to come.

You wait for several minutes, allowing the servants to work, before the Moltoves emerge from the rear patio of the manor. They have changed into more simple clothing for the travel, though their status as wealthy family of a Jenore is still visible by the dyes and lack of stains or wear. With the servants help, Oradia, Wahir, Mina, and Avalla climb up and into the cart, where pillowed benches await. Ereden whistles. With a gentle start, he begins driving the horses forward. Together, you traverse the paved side road around the servants quarters, past the stables, and back towards the front gate. There, another servant stands watch. He nods as you approach, opening both gates to allow you passage, before promptly shutting them behind as you depart the estate.

"Cohort, as discussed," Hara calls out to you, and you quickly move to comply. Fanning out around the Moltoves and their wagon, you take position as you begin your journey to Anfeli.

Stepping out from the manor, Lyseros begins rolling his shoulders and stretching his limbs, limbering up as he knows there's a long journey ahead. Back on our feet so soon, hm? I suppose it wouldn't do to remain stagnant for too long. He takes up his position toward the rear of the cart, closing his eyes for but a moment as he listens to the clops of the horses and the gentle rumble of the cart. Would that I could doze off to such background noise. "Ervemnon grant us your strength and vigilance this journey. Let stars align and deliver us in safety to our destination," the courtesan mutters almost out of habit, having begun many other trips with such a prayer.

"Aye, Captain." Dravos says with a smile on his face as he moves to the front of the wagon.
When Dravos passes Imhe, he walks over, and whispers to her: "I probably don't need to tell you this, but keep an eye out for Stolos, he pulled a stunt earlier."

Deimos purses his lips, putting on a serious face as the group heads out to take positions around the cart. He finds himself up near the front of the cart, standing across from Hara as they begin their journey. Under his breath, he begins to hum, and finding a bit of a tune, Deimos begins to sing softly. "The road goes ever on and on, over rock and under tree," He begins, looking around at the land around him, "By caves where never sun has shone, by streams that never find the sea." He stops there, continuing to hum under his breath. He almost sounds a little solemn as he hums the rest of the tune. After some time he stops humming, giving in to the silence and the almost rhythmic clopping of the horse's hooves.

A shame we have to walk, Stolos thinks as he admires the family's wagon, his legs already aching at the thought of the long journey ahead of them.

At Hara's words, as the rest of the Cohort spreads out around the wagon, Stolos remains near the Cohort Captain, following him closely.

"Have you been to Anfeli many times before Captain?" He asks as they walk, always keen to learn more about the man.

Dravos
"Stolos pulling a stunt?" Imhe repeats, a look of mock surprise on her face for a moment before she smiles wide. "I expect no less from the man. What happened?"
Stolos
"Twice before," Hara answers Stolos. "Many would presume that all of this wide, open farmland has no need for cohort protection, but when those fields feed a quarter of our land, there are all sorts of ruffians looking for coin to slip through the cracks. The city of Anfeli is no different." He smiles at you. "What about yourself? Have you any tales about these heartlands?"

"This will be my first time," Stolos replies. "I'm better traveled than most, but I have never found much inspiration in a field so I was never drawn to Anfeli the way I was to some of the other cities. Besides there's also little demand for songs and poems on the subject of farming. Most of the commoners are farmers themselves, they want to hear songs of great deeds not crop rotations," he continues, cracking a smile.

Stolos
Hara chuckles. "I do not blame you. I left Calavuna for the same reasons. Flax farming has been a profitable venture for my family for generations, but working the land was never what truly drives me. Though I think you may be under-estimating the demand there. Crop rotations may be a dry subject, but some of the oldest farmers I've met still reminisce about the best, or worst, harvests they've ever seen. I've not heard it outside of Calavuna, but you might — do you know The West Wind Blows?

Atropos nods and follows the group out, taking one last look at the orchard. As the wagon is prepared, he checks his pack, ensuring all of his supplies are stowed neatly and orderly, and takes the few minutes to read from his grimoire. Nothing too in depth, but just enough to keep his mind refreshed, to reaffirm the spells he has floating about in his head.

Once everything has been loaded up, he puts the book back in his bag and shoulders it, ensuring that his crossbow and bolts are secure on the side, and falls into step beside Deimos, tapping his fingers to the beat of the tune the other man is humming.

Stolos smiles, pulling his lyre around from its position stowed on his pack. His fingers move nimbly as he strums the opening few notes of The West Wind Blows. "I'd spent quite some time in Calavuna when we met there," the musician says, continuing to play the song's melody. "But yes it's not one you oft hear outside of the region."

Stolos
Hara smirks as the man begins the tune, recognizing it immediately. He hums some of the following notes after Stolos stops, before stopping himself to respond. "Well, that is one tune you can regale the fine farm folk of the region with when we arrive. If none of your tales of heroism inspire them, at least," he continues, offering another chuckle.

Back on the road, and now in position, Imhe leads the group forward away from the estate. Once past the immediate vicinity of Vesarne, Dravos takes his position of forward scout, walking several meters ahead of everyone else as they are guided by Imhe and the steady hand of Ereden at the reins. The first hour sees the olive orchards and fields of the town fade from view, giving way to vast stretches of grassland that billow in the wind around you. The stream of passing villagers and farmers fade away as well, and soon the road becomes a quiet place apart from the chatter among your group. Oradia and her children converse with one another and Ereden, occasionally asking questions of the cohort leaderships. They sing songs to pass the time, which are joined in by all who desire, including Polinos and the servants bringing up the rear.

After another hour or two of rolling, grass plains, a woodland begins to come into view ahead, made of a dense combination of a variety of local flora, though primarily consisting of beech trees and large ground shrubs. Around a half hour after that, you find yourself reaching the edge of the forest, and make your way within its shaded canopy, the shade a welcome respite from the otherwise cloudless sky you'd been experiencing. The forest is cool and calm, though less quiet than the grasslands you'd passed through before. Sounds if birds, deer, and the various small rodents that call the trees their home echo all around you. The initial sparser treeline grows more and more dense as you delve deeper into the woods, with the road growing less even from the occasional rock or stray tree root.

After another hour or so of travel through the dense woods, you begin to hear sounds from up ahead - around a bend in the road - of running water. It is faint at first, but the more you walk, the louder it grows, until it is clear that you are not far from a stream or creek ahead.

Dravos
From your position ahead of the others, you are able to hear the flowing water before anyone else, but as you walk you begin to hear sounds of speech as well. Rounding the bend in the road before all of the others, you spot before you - perhaps 100 meters away - a group of men and women gathered on top of a simple wooden bridge that spans the length of the stream you see before you. They notice you just as you notice them, stopping their conversation to glance your way and stand more at attention as you come into view. Though you cannot tell for certain from this distance, they seem to be well-armed and armored, and one of them beckons for you to come forward.

Imhe
"The girl is enamoured of weapons. Stolos tried to hand the girl his sword, inside, in front of here mother. I intervened." Dravos replies to Imhe.
As the man beckons Dravos to approach, Dravos come forwards, making sure to keep a safe distance. When within hearing range he shouts:

Lyseros lets out a pleasant sigh as the beating sunlight vanishes past the shaded bower. Though initially warm and welcoming, its intensity only seemed to grow as the hours on foot passed. A shame we can't all find a tree to lean up against for a quiet nap. Though I suppose forests are hardly the safest place to stop, be there bear or bandit. He listens to the quiet babble of the brook, glancing at the caravan. "Let us hope there's a bridge in working order. This road hardly seems well-travelled, given its condition."

Stolos joins in the songs, adding both his voice and the sound of his lyre to the ensemble. As the fields give way to the trees of the forest, the bard is grateful for the shade. I didn't realise the tan of a farmhand was mandatory in Anfeli, he thinks, still feeling the soft warmth of the sun radiating out from his most exposed skin.

"Could be the perfect place for an ambush," Stolos says, assuming a knowledgeable tone.

Atropos taps a steady beat, rather than joining in the singing directly, and listens to the ensemble, smiling to himself.

He welcomes the shade of the forest, not for its relief of the heat that he can only vaguely feel, but for the lack of light. His eyes are more accustomed to darker environs, and in the shelter from the bright light of the midday sun he relaxes, his eyes opening up fully. Ah, shade. Thank you for shielding me from the harsh light of day.
He knows, intellectually, that his legs should be starting to burn, that it would be nice to take a break from the walking, but his legs are silent, keeping pace with the others without faltering.

"A bridge, or that the paths do not cross." He says in response to Lyseros, "I am amenable to both."

Dravos
Imhe
Imhe simply frowns and nods as she hears you words, though does not respond any further before you take your position ahead of the others.

"Hello, traveler!" comes the woman's voice, as she continues to beckon you closer. From the way the group is standing, and the distance, you are unable to tell exactly how many are there, but it is clear that there are at least a few others as she takes a few steps for you. "I hope your journey has been a safe one?" she continues, the intonation of her last words forming a question.
Everyone Else
As you walk ever forward, you spot Dravos round the bend head, disappearing from view for the time being. While this has happened several times before during your trek through the forest, this is the first time you have heard him talk to someone. While you can't quite tell what he is saying, you can tell that his voice is louder than usual, suggesting whoever he is speaking to is not too close to him.

Deimos continued to hum his tune right up until the new traveling songs started, and he swiftly switched his tune to join in with theirs. "Ah, a stream- and finally, some fine shade at last." He says, chuckling a bit to himself. "A place to rest for a moment, and relax, perhaps even find a few spare fish." He says, looking back at Atropos. "Surely, you're hungry?" He says, dropping his voice a bit and lightly tapping his friend's arm. He pauses briefly, hearing Dravos' words. He draws his sword and rushes ahead, hoping that Dravos isn't in trouble.

Dravos
"Making sure the roads stay safe," the woman responds, maintaining her distances as she moves the hand she'd been beckoning with to her hip. "Glad to hear we're doing our job well," she continues. There is a pause, before she asks, "are you traveling alone?"
