Kingston 2085

Campaign Descrption

The year is 2085. After the return of magic and the raising of Azlant and Atlantis in 2020, the world was wracked in turmoil. In the chaos, the six biggest corporations in the world took the opportunity to seize extraterritorial sovereignty and form the Corporate Court.

You are in the city of Kingston, Jamaica, a city with a history of survival. Having weathered the upheveal of the Awakening, Kingston has been revitalized with its key location between the Atlantic Ocean and Azlant drawing major attention from the Big Six. However, all is not well, and Kingston has its seedy underbelly, filled with a thousand petty gangs, ruled primarily by the Cuban Mafia and the Yakuza.

You, however, are not them. You are an elite class of criminal known as a Shadowrunner, taking the jobs no one has the skills or guts to pull off. In a world of alienation, dystopia, and magic, you have the power to shift the balance however you see fit.

So, what are you gonna do? Play both sides in a fight between megacorps, and hope the private police services don't make you disappear or worse? Swear alliegance to the Cuban Mafia or Yakuza and be the deciding factor in a gang war? Or perhaps you'll blow up the tallest building in Kingston and watch the system burn around you?

Ball's in your court now, chummer.

Campaign Information

System: Runners in the Shadows, a Forged in the Dark game about criminals in a world of fantasy-cyberpunk.

Character Creation: According to RAW, using the Magical Lineages on pages 341-343 and the Permutations on page 59. 10 minute background is required.

Optional Rules: Hollywood Rules (page 336), and anything that's per session is instead per run.

Tone: Action/heist movie, more about quips than logistics. This campaign will be very sandbox-y and PC-goal driven

Items On Hand
Background
Background and Concept Elements
1) Born Among Kings — Born to a family with deep roots in Kingston and Jamaica in general, CeCe was raised with the streets in mind. In her late teens, she joined the King Street Sinners, a tight-knit syndicate dedicated to improving the lives of those around them on King Street. However, their efforts were quickly shut down by red tape once the megacorps began to notice.
2) Yakuza — Desiring power and influence, and needing a way to survive, CeCe ends up joining the Yakuza. Her skills as a muscle are respected, and she learns much from the gangsters. She makes a name for herself as CeCe the Khan after her bull-headed dedication and ability to command and lead.
3) The Bad Run — While working for the Yakuza, an op goes wrong and she ends up fighting head to head against Ziggy the Zealot. After trading some lives of their crew in a brutal street battle, the two of them manage to get away wounded. After this, Ziggy begins to sour many of the upper Yakuza leaders against CeCe and her methods.
4) Quashed Beef — Wanting to be done with the Yakuza now, her boss offers a way out for one final job. CeCe takes it. It turns out that she is sent to kill Gizamaluke, a former King Street Sinner and friend from her childhood. He has taken over a supersoldier research operation that the Yakuza have funded, and CeCe is dispatched to deal with him. She manages to kill her former friend, but not without tearing through the research lab and being subjected to a horrible experiment. She leaves the Yakuza with her life, and a new monstrous arm to boot.
5) The Khan of Kingston — Working alone, or close to it, CeCe sets out to do what the King Street Sinners could not: protect the people who call the city home. While the megacorps may own everyone and everything, she can still ensure that the smaller players don't end up preying too hard on the weak. Suffer equally, as they say.
6) New Blood? — Tie-in hook to current group
Goals
1)
2)
Secrets
1) As a final job by the Yakuza, CeCe had to put down a former King Street Sinner named Gizamaluke who had gotten himself wrapped up in a research job gone wrong. She still feels some regret about the job, but has justified her decision as it allowing her the means to carry on their original wishes as kids.
2) Ziggy the Zealot has been building up his own gang, and plans to split from the Yakuza too. However, his cult is set on getting rid of all those who stand in the way of the Kingston Divine — which Ziggy has conveniently made the case that CeCe is among the highest of such figures.
People Tied to Character
1) Talk — Cece's former fence who runs an independent operation for many gangs and groups. Despite his name and loquacious spirit, he is known to never give up a seller's identity.
2) K9-2LO — "Too-Low," as he's referred by friends, is an elite guard dog trainer who supplies obedient yet stalwart canine companions to those from all around the globe. CeCe bailed him out on a run once, and since then he's paid her back with the occasional couch to crash on. 2LO is confident, well-dressed, and somehow always has a mint on him to share.
3) Ziggy the Zealot — A yakuza enforcer with deep roots in a Christofascist sect called the Kingston Divine. CeCe butted heads with the man before her vanishing, and he'll never forget that.
Memories, Mannerisms, and Quirks
1) CeCe's familial roots trace back to Old Kingston, during British reign of the island. She holds the city dear to her heart, and despite its evolved nature, she could never leave.
2) CeCe has a terrible fear of the trans-dimensional waters past the city. Her grandmother used to tell her horrible stories about people who never made it back, or got lost in Aztlan.
3) CeCe is never without her armor these days. Some say she even sleeps in it.
4) The monstrous arm that CeCe received during her last job with the Yakuza only comes out during times of peril or fear. Normally, she returns it to its normal appearance, something that required special implant surgery to control.
Background - Family/Class/Profession/Institutions
Family: Mostly scattered across Kingston, though she is able to trace her family back a couple centuries.
Class: Street-level digs, minimalist living, and a low footprint. Any dosh she makes it instantly churned back into gear for the next run, or to help those less fortunate around her.
Profession: Runner. But you didn't hear it from me.
Institutions: Ex-King Street Sinners, Ex-Yakuza
Drives - Primary/Secondary/Tertiary
Primary: Community — CeCe puts the people around her first, especially long-term residents of the streets around her.
Secondary: Honor — Respect goes a long way on the streets. If you denounce her, you're asking for a brutal duel.
Tertiary: Recognition — CeCe is competent, confident, so having her efforts and her feats acknowledged gives her satisfaction.
Goals - Short-Term/Medium-Term/Long-Term
Short-Term: Depends on the group
Medium-Term: Depends on the group
Long-Term: Restart what was once the King Street Sinners, except becoming stronger and a larger player.

Skylar Thrane, the Maladaptive Mechanic

Image

Appearance
Skylar is a young woman in her early 20s, with pale skin, hazel eyes, and hair that is constantly dyed in all sorts of colors (naturally blond). She stands just under 6 feet tall, and has a very average - slightly toned - build. She tends to dress in brighter colors and shades of white, matching her hair and complexion. She has somewhat 'resting bitch face', a mixture of her natural face and also her general annoyance at the world around her stemming from her years in retail work. She is typically seen accompanied by her bright green racing motorcycle, which she rides in her white riding jacket and brightly psychedelic-colored helmet.
Personality
Skylar has a fairly cynical, stoic personality. She does not have a lot of lust for life, and in most situations it shows. She often comes across as bored, annoyed, or a mixture of both. She has low tolerance for bullshit, entitlement, and rude people, a mindset that was developed after years of working as a retail associate at ALDI. With friends and family she has a slightly softer exterior, though not much. She only truly seems happy when she is riding her motorcycle, especially when street racing.

Despite her rougher exterior, all who know her know that she is ultimately not heartless, and will help those she cares about if needed. An easy way to get her to open up more is to tell a clever joke, or a groan-worthy pun, and a smile will break through her otherwise cold demeanor.
Ten-Minute Background
Background and Concept Elements
Early Life - Skylar was born to a middle class family in a small village in the mountains in Sweden. When she was a toddler, her parents moved to Uppsala for work, and that is where she was raised for the rest of her childhood. Her parents were generally good and loving providers, but they were also always overbearing and overprotective of their adventurous child. They would always implement strict curfews, numerous rules for when she could see friends, and many other classic helicopter parent policies that made the girl begin to resent them over time.

Teenage Years - As she grew, and became a normal rebellious teenager, Skylar continued to be adventurous, often injuring herself in the process, much to the dismay of her parents. After several injuries since her childhood, her parents finally decided - when she was 14, almost 15 - to use some of the extra income from their jobs to pay for several implants in the girl, implants meant to keep her safe. She ended up spending several months in and out of the hospital, having procedure after procedure done, with recovery in between. She felt weak and helpless during much of it, and could barely see her friends, and she began to hate her parents for forcing this on her.

On Her Own - After all of the surgeries were complete, her body had changed so much that she barely felt like herself anymore. While it was harder to get hurt, she also just felt more numb a lot of the time, like it was harder to feel anything at all. Her resentment for this treatment and for her parents grew to the point that, a few months before her 16th birthday, she left home to go live with a friend and never went back. She took a few weeks to adjust and to find a retail job, and once 16 she got an apartment of her own - a small, dingy one - to live off her meager salary.

A Retail Life - Over the years, work went from being a saving grace to Skylar, to an overbearing weight on her shoulders. While she had still not forgiven her parents for what they'd done to her, she was starting to understand the importance of living with them compared to being on her own. She had to constantly balance expense on things she needed versus much-needed, but often ignore, recreation. Customers were constantly belittling and made her bitter. Live dragged on and on, seeming the same each day, and she had few outlets for pleasure in her life.

What she did have was news of the goings-on of the world. She was always drawn to news of the crime-ridden areas of the world, notably Jamaica and Kingston specifically. Gangs, street racing, smugglers, and all sorts of other criminals fascinated her. She sought to experience the city for herself, its ups and downs, and all of the craziness it had to offer.

An Adventurous Plan - Scrimping and saving, Skylar came up with a plan to escape her dreary retail drone life for the adventures of Kingston. She first bought an antique, beat-up old motorcycle, which she slowly learned to fix and improve until it was a state-of-the-art racing motorcycle once more, with modern finishings. She then saved to buy herself passage for herself and her bike on a freighter to the western hemisphere, eventually landing in Kingston.

In the city, she barely knew what to do with herself. She came with no plan past actually getting there, and when she succeeded she felt almost as lost as she had when she left her childhood home. However, she made friends with a local mechanic - Chopper - who helped her when her bike broke down. He offered to let her stay with him until she got on her feet.

Crew - ???

Goals
1) Skylar ultimately just wants to find her place in the world, and she thinks the crew might be it. She wants to finally feel like she belongs somewhere, and with people she cares for.

2) I'd like Skylar to be forced to become more open to others, especially her new crew, so that she can grow out of her slump.
Secrets
1) Skylar doesn't talk to people about it, but her racing is an outlet for her own desire to feel something, even pain, since it is so hard for her to do so. It is a dangerous past-time made even more dangerous by how little she feels from it. She worries it might kill her someday, but she does it anyway.

2) Though she was never informed of this, Skylar's parents implanted a tracking chip in her as part of the numerous implants she received. They have been silently keeping watch over her from a distance, allowing her to find her own way while also never fully being free from them like she wants.
People Tied to Character
Semi and Mirabel Thrane - Skylar's parents, who are both mid-ranking corporate executives. She no longer has a direct relationship with them, though they have made it clear they are willing to if she is. She still has not forgiven them for forcing several implants on her in her youth.

Chopper - A gearhead and friend, who allowed Skylar to use his shop to repair her bike when she was new to Kingston. She stayed with him for awhile, and he taught her more about being a mechanic than she'd learned on her own. He wants her and she knows it, which is why she only tries to ask for his help sparingly. The two get along, but she can tell that he is her friend more because he wants to date her and less because of actual camaraderie.

Drano - A smuggler and rival, who has nearly gotten Skylar arrested several times by riding near her when being chased and causing the cops to tail her instead. She has challenged him many times to race her, with the condition being that if she wins he will leave her alone. His constant refusal to race annoys her more than the cops do.

Memphis - A sailor and rival, who helped Skylar get across the sea to Kingston for the promise of a favor, and she has not returned it yet. She snuck Skylar and her motorcycle onto the freighter she works on for cheap, in return for a favor next time she is in port. Skylar has no idea when that will be, or what the favor is, but is always a little bit anxious know that she owes the woman.

Memories, Mannerisms, and Quirks
1)

2)

3)
Background - Family/Class/Profession/Institutions
Family: Only child of well-off parents, though she no longer is on speaking terms with them. No close extended family members.

Class: Raised upper middle class, currently in poverty/working poor

Profession: retail previously, amateur mechanic/runner currently

Institutions: ALDIKEA, party crew
Drives - Primary/Secondary/Tertiary
Primary: Freedom. All of her life, Skylar has been under the thumb of her helicopter parents, and it is her desire to be free of them and free to live how she want that has motivated all of her recent activities.

Secondary: Anti-corporatism. Skylar suffered at the hands of the mega-corporations indrectly, through her parents, and then directly as an employee for one. She has a great disdain for the corrupt pseudo-governments of mega-corporations, and has a strong desire to see them - especially ALDIKEA - crash and burn to the ground.

Tertiary: Masochism. Skylar feels little pain and can barely get injured, and the toll her implants have taken on her body - completely absent of her consent - has made her develop an unhealthy relationship with pain. She races in attempt to injure herself, so she can feel something, but to little avail.
Goals - Short-Term/Medium-Term/Long-Term
Short-Term: Get to know her new crew, succeed at a job.

Medium-Term:

Long-Term:

Friends/Rivals
Mr Black: A Exo-Heavy spy who has a soft spot for her and is often willing to provide her with information.

Crossfire: A rival assassin for hire. The two have tangled over the same contracts on several occasions and have developed a rivalry.
Special Abilities
Gun Control: You can draw and reload firearms quickly, regardless of weapon type. You get +1d to rolls to unleash a barrage of rapid fire at an enemy.

A barrage of rapid fire consumes more ammunition, but allows you to keep up a steady rate of fire in a battle (enough to “suppress” a small team of up to five people, discouraging them from maneuvering or attacking), rather than stopping for a slow reload or weapon switch after each volley. If you unleash a barrage in combat against an enemy who’s threatening you, you’ll still make an action roll in the battle (maybe with Stalk, Fight, or Wreck).

Scout:When you gather information to locate a target, you get +1 effect When you hide in a prepared position or use camouflage, you get +1d to rolls to avoid detection. A “target” can be a person, a destination, a good ambush spot, an item, etc.

Introducing... Griffith Cassidy, the Soldier of Fortune. (#9B59B6)
Appearance
Image

Backstory Notes
Griffith was born in Kingston in the year 2060 to Japanese parents. Growing up, Griffith spent his weekends playing video games and watching anime, finding inspiration from them.
His father was a middle-low member of the Yakuza there, and Griffith later joined (sometime during his teenage years) and was with them for some time (During this period Griffith's father gifts him with a pair of pistols, which he got to customize himself. The pair of pistols were white and black, and inscribed with some text.) While working within the Yakuza, Griffith meets CeCe and they go on several missions together, though at some point part ways due to what Griffith saw as a disagreement.
Around the age of 21, Griffith joins a small radical cell who called themselves Spiral (Name Not Final) and becomes close with his crew there. On what was supposed to be their final mission, Griffith led his crew into a trap and barely managed to get away with his own life, watching his friends die to Vik Bates's bodyguards. Griffith left Spiral (NNF) after this, and spent several months on his own, drinking away his sorrows and his memory of his friends.

10-Minute Background
Appearance
Griffith is a male human. He has untamed black hair atop his head and distant eyes which take a fierce green color. He is tall and lanky, not really having much muscle but he makes up for it by being fairly fast. Griffith has pale skin and looks to be Japanese in origin. (Parents were Japanese, but he was born in Kingston)
Background Elements
Birth - Griffith was born to Japanese parents a couple of years after they moved to Kingston, roughly during the year 2060. His father was a pretty middle-level member of the local Yakuza at the time, and though he was getting up there in age, that afforded some level of safety and protection to their family. As a result of this, Griffith's mother stayed at home, and mostly raised Griffith herself, though he still saw his father fairly often.
Early Life - This continued as Griffith got older, he went to a public school but never really had many friends. Because of his mom's influence, he became quite the "nerd", having been given many old-timey video games, books, comics, and movies. He was practically entirely engrossed in it growing up and well into his teens.
Later Life - During his teens, he eventually got roped into the Yakuza like his father, being the oldest son of his family.

Friends/Rivals
Special: Dio PC, details to come later

Wisp - A mostly friendly spirit that haunts the building Rune lives in. Keeps out of the way for the most part, but 'pays rent' in keeping an eye out for trouble.

Corpo - Ethan Miller, the corporate liason and representative for Arcanotek, a subsidiary of Mexitech Logistics. Has his sights set on recruiting Rune to be a wagemage, via a contract signed by his parents when he was young. Rune knows of him through the grapevine, and has managed to dodge him so far, but it's only a matter of time before he catches up.

Wrath - A Free Spirit that Rune used to work with, until he unceremoniously cut ties and left them behind. They still harbor resentment for the cold treatment, and Rune would prefer to not run into them ever again. They have a preference for fire, and heated environs and situations.

Special Abilities
Sorcerer: You know the unique methods to activate metaplanar energies through your body to cast spells. You can Study a spell formula to summon a supernatural effect. You begin with two spells already learned.
Without this special ability, the study and practice of spells leaves you utterly vulnerable to the metaplanar energies you attempt to harness. These efforts are harmful to your health and psyche.
When you take this secret art, choose your known spells and record them in your notes for future reference. When you use this ability to cast a spell, pay the cost(s) accordingly with its magnitude and type. When you cast a spell despite danger, make an action roll (usually Assense). For more details, see Sorcery, starting on page 296.

Spells Known
Shock [Lightning]
Shield [Barrier]
Succor [Heal]

Conjuror: You can Assense to force a nearby astral entity to appear before you and obey a command you give it. You are never terrified by a astral entity you summon or attempt to conjure (though your allies may be).
The GM will tell you if you sense any astral entities nearby. If you don’t have an entity in mind, one will still show up (the summoning is automatic, but the command is not). However, failure in that case can also cause a horror to show up (the baseline force you can summon is equal to the crew’s Tier, as usual). If you want, you can gather information (maybe Assense, Study, or Survey) to attempt to locate one.
By default, an astral entity wants to satisfy its need for life essence. Elementals are also mindlessly vengeful towards the living. When you conjure it, you can give it a general or specific command, but the more general it is (like “Protect me”) the more the spiritual entity will interpret it according to its otherworldly desires. Your control over the spiritual entity lasts until the command is fulfilled, or until a day has passed, whichever comes first.

10 Minute Background
Background and Concept Elements
(gonna actually fill this out later, im running out of juice that makes me write)
1) New Disney
2) Moving to Kingston
3) Strange Power
4) On Your Own, Kid
5) A Hel-Hound is Born
6) Getting Burned
7) Gleipnir
8) New Ties

Secrets
1) Known - Rune chose the name Fenrir, after the ancient story of The Chained Wolf, to represent himself when he shed the name Hel-Hound. He hasn't told anyone this new name, it is a private one that no one is supposed to know.

2) Unknown - Rune's parents signed a contract to guarantee employment for their son, in exchange for moving to Kingston from New Disney. The transfer data that was corrupted, stranding him and his parents in Kingston, was recently found by Arcanotek, and they have sent Ethan to look for Rune to collect on that contract.

People Tied to Character
Wisp - A mostly friendly spirit that haunts the building Rune lives in. Keeps out of the way for the most part, but 'pays rent' in keeping an eye out for trouble. Sometimes they eat the trouble, but they aren't the type to hunt or chase their food, so any that get away describe the place as "cursed" or "haunted".

Memories, Mannerisms, and Quirks
1) "Why won't you believe me" Rune cried, "He's not imaginary! His name is Theo, he's my age, and he's real!! Why can't you see him?! Why are you ignoring him??" The 8 year old stamped his foot to punctuate his question, and stormed off to sit on the bench. Theo sat next to him, gave him a ghostly hug that he barely felt, and stood up to leave. He never saw Theo again.

2)"Oh, come on Rune, just one more little fire. We have time~" Wrath was curling around him, their heat felt more than their pseudo-presence, and he couldn't lie, it was tempting. And then he heard it: a creak, a crack, and a support falling. Falling on someone, from the sound of the scream. In an instant, the heat left his body, and he turned and ran out of the building, shivering in the newfound chill.

3) Rune puts a lot of effort and intention into being very even-handed and calm. Impulsivity and lacking self-control were two of his defining traits as Hel-Hound, and though he does well most of the time, they still lurk in the shadows of his mind.

4) All of Rune's magic is self-taught, and as a result, is a lot more messy and wasteful on energy than Corporate Magic, or even the traditional Hermetic Mages of the So-Cal Valley.

Background - Family/Class/Profession/Institutions
Family: Rune's parents were right on the border of lower and middle class when they lived in New Disney. They were promised additional benefits for moving to Kingston, but when the files corrupted they were left with almost nothing, and scraped together a life in the slums. One day they were taken by corporate thugs, and Rune never saw them again.

Class: Lower - Rune lives in a dubiously haunted building that he barely affords by doing odd jobs. He used to live more comfortably in that same building, until he quit the more lucrative runs he was doing.

Profession: Freelance Magician - Rune is the guy you call when there's a paracritter prowling around your house at 3AM preventing you from going to work, or when your car gets haunted by a not-so-friendly Free Spirit.

Previously: Firebrand - A runner, just starting to make a name for himself by taking jobs that primarily involved arson. Between him and Wrath, he could technically solo partner jobs. Disappeared from those circles without a word to anyone, hoping to not be followed.

Institutions: Himself [current] - No gods no Corps no masters. Arcanotek [Mexitech] - Attempting to find Rune.

Drives - Primary/Secondary/Tertiary
Primary: Agency - Control of one's self and actions and destiny. The ability to affect change in one's own life.

Secondary: Independence - No one should be beholden to any outside force: magical, corporate, personal, nothing. Owe nothing, and be owed nothing.

Tertiary: Knowledge - Narrow horizons make for narrow worldviews. The secrets of the universe are sitting right there, ready for the taking; all you have to do is reach.

Goals - Short-Term/Medium-Term/Long-Term
Short-Term: TBD by group

Medium-Term: Evade Ethan Arcanotek, and hopefully fully deal with that situation.

Long-Term: Master his spellcraft, and himself, to the point where he doesn't feel the need to hold back.

OOC Goals
1) I'd like to see Rune learn to rely on others, and actually let others into his life.
2) My initial idea is that it's not actually control that he needs, but trust: trust in himself, trust in others, and he needs to grow into that.
