The 2nd Fleet: Journey to the Edge of the Known World — IC

Post by Namelessjake »

I: Preparations

Image

It is a crisp spring morning with a stiff sea breeze blowing in from the East. Unfavourable winds, but nothing the Albatross, the Constellation, the Sea Wolf or the Espérance can't manage. The journey ahead promises to be much more of an ordeal for the ships and crew alike.

A murmuring crowd has already started to form along the surrounding quays of the Groznid Bay docks where the four ships are lined up, in anticipation of seeing the fleet set off in a couple of hours. The last of the loading preparations are underway, with the crews hard at work hoisting food, water, and other supplies for the expedition onto the vessels.

You stand on the quayside watching the proceedings, knowing it will likely be months before you feel solid ground beneath your feet again. A young junior guild member comes running up to you, skidding to a halt when he sees you. He stops to catch his breath for a moment before speaking.

"Talrelia and Iloron want to see you," he says, pointing further down the quay towards the Sea Wolf's moorings. He then takes off down the docks presumably looking for someone else as well.

You make your way along the bustling docks, dodging dockworkers carrying crates of supplies and other expedition members and passengers getting ready to board their ships and spot the two guild leaders stood by a stack of barrels next to the gangplank leading up on to the deck of the Sea Wolf. The two are deep in conversation going over what looks like a cargo manifest.

As you wait a few other expedition members you recognise join you.

"I think that's all of you," Talrelia says, suddenly looking up from the manifest. "We have a small problem we need to be handled before we depart," the young second in command of the expedition elaborates. "Iloron here assures me you- Wait that's for the Albatross not the Sea Wolf!" She begins before cutting herself off and storming off in the direction of a pair of orcish dock workers who were in the process of loading a crate, continuing to yell at them the entire time.

Iloron sighs and turns to you. "I'll cut to the chase as we're running out of time. We don't know where Tofyr is. I need you to find him and make sure he's on board the Albatross before we leave," he explains. "We can't leave without our leader," he adds although you detect a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

"Ask around, someone must know where he is. He can't have gone far. I think I saw him last night with some of our Order escort so maybe try them?" He suggests. "I should go deal with that," he says pointing over to Talrelia who appears to becoming increasingly loud in her dressing down of the two dockworkers.

"Good luck," he adds before hurrying off to defuse the situation, leaving your group alone on the docks.

Zima breathes deeply, letting the salty, crisp Kurnish air fill her lungs. A chill racks her spine and she reflexively pulls her shawl tighter around her shoulders. I don't think I will ever tire of the beauty of the weather. No matter where I travel, it is always unique.

She stands with Caoimhe, staying unusually silent as the anxious energy of the many different organizations and people washes over her. It was odd to her. Back in Peregozupale, everyone simply worked in parallel. Though the responsibilities and duties might be different, the workload and end-goal were always the same. Tend the fungal fields, lead the district, teach the children -- all was done with their people's survival in mind.

Instead, it seemed like every major power of the surface world had their hand in this expedition. What was meant to be a quest for knowledge had evolved into a global ambition of many flavors. The only true thing everyone has in common on this dock is finding Quellam. Once we arrive, though... At least she could feel safe in that one truth.

She watches with concern as the longshoremen are given a stern dressing down by Talrelia. For how competent the logistics officer is, Zima considers how frustrating it must be to see mistakes made before one's own eyes.

The Kandoran listens closely as Iloron speaks, careful to pick up every word in the sailor's tongue. Somehow, she is hardly surprised to hear Tofyr coming up missing, especially with the expedition about ready to begin. She sighs, smiling at the comedic timing of his eccentric antics.

When the third-in-command slinks off, Zima turns to others. "Good morning," she says, bearing a wide smile. "And there we are: our first task of the expedition, no?" Tofyr must be up to to something important for him to disappear like this. Well, important to him, maybe.

Taliesin listens intently as Iloron describes the situation, and as he walks away he has a bit of a quiet laugh at the situation with the orcs. He shook his head quickly before looking back at the others, tugging on his gloves as if it would help him to ignore the wind's chill.

He had a smile on his face as he takes a step forward, "Suppose so! Didn't think we'd be dealing with something like this so soon. Had a bit of a late night, thought today'd be more of a 'celebration' and so on..." He trailed off, thinking his statement would be funnier than it actually ended up being. He slides back. "...Right, anyways, looking for Tofyr, right?" He asks, trying to ignore the bit of a shiver in his voice. Even months after getting here, he's still not quite used to it... and might never be. "Where should we get started?"

"Goodmorning." Ilmoto looks at the sky, wondering whether this expedition will be more fruitful than the Kandoras debacle. He squints his eyes trying to push away the memories.

After hearing about Tofyr, Ilmoto snaps back to the here and now.
Tofyr is missing. Why does that not surprise me. I've known him all my life, but he never fails to surprise.

"It's good to see you again Zima. I suppose it is our first objective." Ilmoto replies to his friend with a polite nod.

"I propose we find Ser Phelia Ortraud. She can point us to the escort members Tofyr was seen with."

Louie grimaces as a chilly sea breeze strikes in just a way to pierce his very soul, still not quite used to the brisk coastal climate of the northern city. I should've worn that awful poncho Uncle Dohmnall bought for me. A shame it didn't look better. He slightly shrugs, pulling in his crossed arms tightly to keep warm.

He stares out into the churning sea, a pit of nervousness growing in his stomach as it becomes more and more apparent that there's no turning back and that he was going to have to face the unknown. He tries to wear a brave face, his faux air of confidence the only thing keeping him from losing his breakfast in the wharf. He perks up as the guild member strides up to him, eager for a distraction. With a nod, he makes his way towards the two leaders.

He can't help but crack a smirk, out of nervousness and humor, at the disorganization with loading the ships. Off to a great start, are we? At this rate, she'll be loading the ships herself. He turns his attention back towards Iloron, cocking his head as he listens. He muffles a chuckle. It's that kind of morning for everyone, hm?

"Morning," Louie says plainly, a small yawn escaping as if the word triggered it. He nods along to Ilmoto's words. "That seems the logical place to start. Perhaps he spoke of his plans with them last night. At the very least, they were likely the last to see him."

Caoimhe takes a deep, satisfying breath of the cold, salty air of Groznid bay, savoring the uniqueness of the experience. The chill wind is something she'd grown accustomed to growing up, as the forests around Vyridis were hardly warmer than the Kurnish peninsula. The sights and sounds that lay before her, on the other hand, were truly remarkable however. The port in Fort Sakura is busy, not nowhere near as large or bustling as the various ports of Groznid. The sheer number of people moving about, loading and unloading cargo, are like nothing she has ever witnessed before, and her face clearly shows her excitement to be witnessing something new.

Noticing the chill the Zima is feeling, Caoimhe clasps the woman's hand tightly in her own and gives her a small smile, hoping to warm her lover up some with her touch. The open sea will surely be much colder, if the trip to Kandoras is anything to go by. It is good we have our own quarters to keep to when the wind is really howling, I do not envy the sailors one bit.

When their presence is request, she eagerly follows alongside Zima, watching her surroundings intently and with no small amount of wonder, as she continues to take in the sights. Her sightseeing is immediately interrupted, however, with news of the mysterious disappearance of their fearless leader.

"A lovely day, isn't it, friends?" she asks, once Iloron leaves and everyone begins to greet one another. She gives them all a genuine smile, their predicament doing little to dampen her mood. "Finer once we can locate Tofyr and set to sea."

She listens as the others speak, nodding as the recommendation is made to visit their chief OCB escort. One would hope that someone sent along to provide us protection would have an idea where he is. If not, this might be more serious than we think.

"Well, let's go see her, then," the woman confirms, agreeing with the others about their best course of action. "If she doesn't know, we could always check around the local taverns. He wouldn't be the first expedition leader I saw drinking their nerves away right before a big mission."

Taliesin nodded at the others' words, "Sounds like as good of a start as any! Can't lie, I thought about stopping in at a tavern before we left as well. Might be a good chance to do so." He let out a bit of a shudder. "I wonder where we should get started looking for her..."

You remember that the Albatross is moored slightly further up the docks, where much of the crowd is beginning to form.

Zima smiles at Ilmoto's greeting. It is a blessing to be able to make this journey with him here, too. Her smile grows when Caoimhe's warm hand finds her own. It is like having my own little family away from my family.

"Ser Phelia, then," she agrees, keeping her eyes peeled for any Order members.

[SHOW]
Scanning the crowds of people moving around the docks, you spot one of Ser Phelia's knights, recognising them from the journey North from Fort Sakura as Ser Karoz, a young Orc freshly knighted. As you spot him he disappears into the crowd headed further along the docks towards where the Constellation and the Albatross are moored.

Something catches Zima's eye and she turns, assuming it is a vision of sorts. Instead, she finds a familiar face among the many.

"There, one of her retinue,"
she says excitedly, pointing. When he disappears further in the crowd, she frowns. "Follow me, I just saw him."

Following Zima through the bustling crowds, you near the Constellation - the sister ship of the Sea Wolf. Similar preparations are under way and the crowd thins out a little leaving room for the piles of supplies dotted around the quayside and the dockworkers busy loading the vessel.

Near the Constellation's gang plank, you can see her captain, Helen Harlaw, in conversation with the leader of the Elven Ancestral Assembly, Mianala Syltoris.

"Lead the way," Louie says plainly, gesturing forward. I do hope this doesn't end up being a wild goose chase... Though Gods know I'm more than capable of that. He smirks to himself, following Zima through the crowds along the quay. "Perhaps we might shout out to him? As appealing as chasing a moving target for minutes on end sounds..." He looks through the crowd, trying to spot the orcish man too to see if he might be within range to hear.

Standing on his toes and using his height to his advantage, Louie peers down the docks, his eyes meeting their quarry. He points towards the direction the orc had went. "That way, towards the Albatross. Let's make haste, hm?" He's got to run out of places to go soon, yes? As endearing as chasing an orc all morning sounds... He sighs, already eager for a chance to sit and relax.

The crowd eventually does thin closer to the Albatross, with the mass of people leaving space for the loading like in front of the Constellation, although the area is much busier than around the other ships.

The Albatross is an impressive sight. Nearly half again as big as the Constellation and the Sea Wolf and much more ornate in its design - with elaborate golden dwarven embellishments on much of the hull.

A small wooden stage has been constructed in front of the ship, near which you can see Lord Amardovis himself surrounded by a large retinue of fleet members and other wealthy backers. He is expected to give a speech before the ships weigh anchor and slip their moorings ready to leave Voreld behind.

The sharp eyed among you are able to spot Ser Karoz and some of the other knights, including Ser Phelia a little ways from Lord Amardovis' group. While most of the knights are not wearing their full armour, Ser Phelia has chosen to don her full plate mail, which appears to be freshly polished, along with all the additional dress items displaying her rank of Sergeant in the Order.

"Can I help you?" Ser Phelia asks in a smug self important tone, raising an eyebrow, as you approach. "You're some of our charge, no?" She asks, after looking you all up and down.

Zima stays quiet, admiring the woman's plate armor — the polished metal reflecting the dreary Groznidian skies. Distracted, she turns slightly to Caoimhe, her thoughts manifesting as a voice in her partner's mind. It is beautiful, but... would this be a wise thing to wear on the voyage? It looks heavy, and like it would sink.

"Ilmoto!" Caoimhe exclaims, as she finally notices her friend. "I was glad to hear you were joining the voyage as well. I had wondered if you would come, it's nice to have some of our old venture crew back together again. I do hope you remember Zima, too," she continues as they walk. She spots the orc they were looking for, but Louie points him out first, so she remains silent, following along with the rest of the group.

When they finally make their way to the ship, Caoimhe does her best to keep a polite facade as Ser Phelia speaks. Facing Zima, she takes advantage of the woman's telepathic abilities to send her a thought. 'She is always so full of herself, of course she chooses to put on her armor before the voyage. Can't let some foreigners think she is a lay person before departing.'

Louie hides a grimace as Ser Phelia's telltale smug tone comes through, having to bite his tongue to not anger the Order lead. They just had to send her of all people? Perhaps they wanted some peace and quiet away for a time... He quietly sighs, knowing they have more important business to attend to. "We came to ask if you know of Tofyr's whereabouts. He hasn't made himself known this morning, and we heard he was last seen with some of your ranks."

"I am happy to be along friends, Caoimhe. Ilmoto replies to his friend, with a smile on his face. "My father always said that change of scenery was paramount for research. Alas, I won't be able to further my experiments with that soap I've told you about." As Ilmoto quips, he suddenly notices ser Phelia. Glad to hear Phelia is in good mood today...

As Louie asks his question, Ilmoto worries that the young man's questioning will do more harm than good. I hope I can salvage this. Not looking forward to being stuck on a boat with a sour Phelia.
"Greetings, Ser Phelia. Yes, you are right of course. I believe we've had the pleasure of meeting in Fort Sakura. Talrelia Ylvath and Iloron Dorquen need to know wether Tofyr Sobriall is onboard the Albatross or not for reasons you'd surely understand. "Ah yes, of course, I remember you. As for Tofyr, I haven't seen him today so he's yet to board any of the ships," Ser Phelia says, directly replying to Illmoto and ignoring Louie.

"Have any of you seen him today or tonight?" She asks her knights. The response is several shaking heads but one of the young knights speaks up.

"Ser Percival was buying drinks for a lot of the expedition last night at the Brass Star Inn last night. I think Tofyr was among them," she says stepping forward from the group of lower ranked knights to join the conversation.

"Thank you Ser Lyari, Phelia says giving her a short nod. "Ser Percival Melchett II has yet to report for orders today. I would suggest you start at the Inn," she says turning back to your group, a strong hint of annoyance in her voice.

Those of you familiar with the OCB recognise the knight's name as that of one of the high ranking Captains of the Order - presumably this is his son.

Zima considers Caoimhe's words, feeling like she is looking at the officer in a new light — one that is not charitable. Still, she is unsure. Perhaps she is simply proud of her station?

Louie crosses his arms and glares at the knight, acutely aware that she intentionally ignored him over Ilmoto. I should write a missive home before we leave. I'm sure Barus could make sure she's relieved of her rank upon our return... He grimaces internally as Taliesin offers a bow. Respect is earned, and she's not earned it. She'll walk all over everyone if they let her. He subtly rolls his eyes, turning his attention towards the task at hand.

He can't help but smirk at the elven scholar fumbling with his recollection. "If you did, you must've had a wild night if you can't remember for certain." Not eager to trust Taliesin's sense of direction, he tries to remember the inn in question from his short time in the city.

Zima nods earnestly at Ser Phelia, sensing the defeat in her eyes. One broken wheel slows the rest. She knows what that had been like, back in Peregozupale as Seer. Still, we must raise up the few who limit us, else they be left behind. She eyes the sea-ready vessels, ready to sail at a given notice. Literally, in this case.

As they step away from the knight to reconvene, she gathers around with the others. We are so far from where we began. To know an inn on the other side of this world? They must be well-traveled, Zima marvels to herself.

Louie raises a hand at Taliesin in a futile attempt to get him to stop embarrassing himself over his memory lapse. "It's fine, I know the way," the elf says, barely hiding a smirk. "I walked past it last night. Just follow me." Once everyone is accounted for, he begins to guide the group towards the inn.

Louie begins to lead you back into to the crowd, although this time you head away from the water's edge and the crowd thins out much quicker. You make your way down a side street between two of the large warehouses which line the street along the docks.

The streets here are still relatively busy, lined with smaller warehouses and various inns for travellers, but you are able to move much more freely than on the quayside. After a few minutes you arrive at a large inn on a street corner. The wooden building looks old and has a noticeable lean to it. Three large metal stars hang from a beam which extends out into the street.

Opening the heavy oaken door and stepping inside you are immediately confronted with a musty odour and the smell of stale beer. The room you find yourselves in appears to be most of the ground floor of the building and is dotted with wood and iron pillars and beams with no apparent symmetry or reason to their placement. Shields, bearing the markings of local tribes, and animal furs hang from the walls and pillars.

A long bar runs the length of one side of the room behind which an aging orc stands polishing glasses. He offers you a grunt in greeting as he sees you step inside.

There are only a handful of other groups in the tavern at this time and Ser Percival, being one of the only humans, is easy to spot. The young blonde knight is sat at the bar conversing and drinking with what look to be locals.

Zima follows Louie, blindly trusting his confidence in leading them to their quarry. To know one's way about a city of this size is quite a feat, she considers, feeling somewhat lost after a few streets.

She could walk for hours through a cavern, and find her way back with ease. But when it came to the strange and many different ways that city roads were organized from city to city, Zima felt out of touch. Some are in neat shapes. Some, the web of a spider. I cannot say which Groznid is meant to be.

As they enter the tavern, Zima spots Percival quickly. Before they approach, she casts a studious eye over him. Did he spend the evening and now the morning in here?

Taliesin follows Louie along the roads to the inn, just deciding to stop talking. He walks in with them and quickly spots Sir Percival the same as the others, and gives a gentle smile. "Suppose that's good, then, don't have to look too far for him."

Caoimhe follows after the others, mostly distracted by the sights and sounds of the bustling port and town, finding little interest in the hunt for the missing knight commander. If he doesn't want to go on the voyage, why did he come so far? And if he does want to go, why would he be so late?

Once in the tavern, she quickly makes her way to the knight. "Do you know where Tofyr is?" she asks, interrupting whatever conversation he might be having. "No one seems to know and we're now in charge of finding him."

Louie feels relief as they manage to spot the young Percival at the inn, drinking despite the hour. Is this really the time to be reveling. I'd have thought the high-and-mighty Ser Phelia would've kept her soldiers in line. He crosses his arms and leans against a wall, closing his eyes for a moment as the early morning hour catches up with him. Stifling a yawn, he watches Caoimhe interrupt the knight's merriment, a slight smirk on his face. Glad to know she doesn't waste any time.

"Uhhh what?" Ser Percival asks, slowly turning around on the stool he is sat on. The young man's face clearly showing the signs of a heavy night of drinking. "Oh Tofyr! Yes he was here last night," the knight adds, things clearly falling into place for him as he appears to recognise at least a couple of you.

"The Kurnish sure can drink you know. Groznid Bay puts Fort Sakura to shame on that front," he says with a laugh. "Last I saw of Tofyr he was talking to someone from the New World Trading Company. Hothar... Hrothar... Hogar...? Something like that?
The night is a bit of a blur after that I'm afraid,"
he says grabbing a tankard from the bar and taking a large swig.

The young knight does appear tired with noticeable bags under his eyes and his appearance is somewhat disheveled, especially in comparison to the immaculate appearance of Ser Phelia, all the signs of a late and debaucherous night.

By the empty bowl and plate near his seat he appears to have at least eaten something this morning. You do spot that his drink is an ale, although that could easily be chalked up to not trusting the water served at an establishment like this rather than continuing the night's festivities into the morning.

Zima frowns, shooing away a vision of a spirit taking the man's drink from him. He drinks it as an alternative to the water, she explains to herself and the disappearing remnants of the disappointed spirit. I wouldn't want to be sick from local water on the first day of the expedition either.

"Hogar?" she repeats, making note of the name. "Do you remember what they were speaking about?"

Taliesin stroked his chin, glancing between the drunken knight and the crew of people he's now teamed up with. "Another wild chase. I wonder where this 'Hogar' will be." He tilts his head. "I hope they've not gone too far. Or that they know where Tofyr is."

"I wasn't exactly trying to eavesdrop they were sat out of the way, over there," the young knight replies, gesturing to a cramped wooden booth over in the corner of the room. "Probably just talking about the usual expedition topics. Hopefully once we're underway people will come up with another topic of conversation, it's becoming quite a drag," Percival adds, taking another swig of ale.

Caoimhe, Illmoto, Louie
With Ser Percival's previous mention of the New World Trading Company, you notice the bartender's demeanour shift slightly, appearing to be uncomfortable with that line of conversation.

Zima frowns, disagreeing with the young knight's sentiment. This expedition is everything... How can he say that? She fails to understand how somebody could ever grow tired of talking about what they might encounter. Ignoring the need to argue, she instead steps away from the man without speaking, making her way toward the booth.

Two spirits sit there, sipping from flagons, and shouting in silent enjoyment. With a subtle flick of her wrist, she clears them from sight and peers down and around the booth, not quite sure what she might be looking for. The New World Trading Company, she considers. I dare not speak cruel of these people without knowing their thoughts myself, but they must have their own goals. Profits, to be sure. Is this coincidence they are sharing drink with the leader of our expedition? Or is there reason behind this?

Louie lets out a concealed sigh as Percival's drunken haze seemingly leads them to another fleeting trail, another figure to track down all in pursuit of one apparently-irresponsible man. Gods forbid you be on time to your own expedition. Noticing the barkeep's distaste at the mention of the trading company, the elf raises a brow. Ignoring the knight, he turns his attention towards the barkeep instead. "You seem to know something about the company, friend. Is something the matter?"

"Hmm? Oh nothing. The Ja’Velnok family have been nothing but good to this area," the bartender says as Louie addresses him, quickly glancing at one of the other patrons sat further down the bar. "Akare Ja’Velnok owns half the buildings around here, including this one," he adds before returning his gaze to the glasses he has been polishing.

Zima
Investigating the booth at first you see nothing out of the ordinary. The table and seats are worn and stained from years of use but show no signs of anything strange. However a glint from beneath the table catches your eye, bending down for a closer look you find it is a small golden pin which bears the sigil of the Explorer's Guild. Picking it up you notice it is still attached to a small piece of torn fabric as if it was ripped off its wearer.

Alarmed, Zima bends down, gently picking up the pin and fabric before pulling it close to her. Standing upright, she sighs inwardly. Was our leader taken? she considers, her mind racing.

Turning to Caoimhe, the seer uses her telepathy to speak with her partner. A clue, perhaps. Signs of a struggle, a fallen pin. I suspect Tofyr may have been abducted. Do not worry the bartender, or the young knight, however — especially should the former's patron be complicit in such matters. Instead, might you suggest that we leave and continue this search elsewhere? We should discuss in safety.

Louie narrows his gaze upon the barkeep, finding his words and demeanor odd, but trying to gauge with more certainty. And who's that guy at the bar?

Taliesin tapped the bar slightly as he thinks to himself. There's too many questions. Too many possibilities of what the Trading Company could want with Tofyr. He glances back at Zima, wondering if she's found anything. He looks back at the bar. "Did Tofyr and the man leave together? Or did they leave separately? Were you able to catch it?"

Louie
The bartender's reply seems forced and he is clearly quite uneasy discussing the Ja’Velnoks.
