I wonder what Velasco's intentions are here. It seems before he was so focused on getting Lin here, I doubt he knows what comes next, Atrix wonders as Lin and Velasco split off to their own corner of the bar.

Velasco
Lin listens closely, eyes wide and focused. "You've been through a lot," he says. "A lot more than me." He puts a hand on your shoulder, the warmth of his touch felt even through your wrappings. "I sort of always wondered if somebody would take me away from the city, and lead me into a life more exciting. I just... well, didn't think it would look like this." He smiles softly, though the sadness is evident in his gaze.

"This is all a mess, but... part of that is me. I think we both fell into this quickly, before we really knew the other person. The mystery surrounding you was part of it. The strange scars, your accent, the raven, the poetry... I don't know. It just drew me in. And I was afraid to ask, to know more, because I wasn't sure what I would find out. What if it was all an act, or entirely mundane, or... I don't know? It sounds so stupid out loud. All I know is I can't hold that ignorance against you. I could have asked."

He sighs again, taking a sip of his ale and looking around the tavern. "But what happens now? I don't know that somebody like me belongs with the people you speak of. I'm just, I'm not tough like you. I don't have that resolve."

Velasco
Velasco smiled softly at Lin, still feeling guilty at everything that has happened so far, but genuinely happy that it seems to be going okay. "I mean... I have a place for you to stay here if you're not feeling up to it." He says, "There would be gaps of time where we wouldn't see each other, but I'd write back to you when I could. Maybe there's a job you could get here that doesn't need you to get up in danger?" He suggests, thinking about it for a moment. "I feel like you're braver than you think. Maybe not a fighter, but you care a lot about people, warming hearts and hearths alike." He smiles softly leaning in close to Lin. "The last few times I was here I stayed at the Wayfarer's Rest. They've got good people, and good food there." Velasco says, remembering fondly the food from before. "Is there anything else you want to know before we go back to join the others?" He asks, wanting to make sure Lin is satisfied.

Velasco
Lin nods as you explain, his eyes wandering around the tavern before meeting yours again. "Yes, I can stay with you. And I was thinking the same thing, about a job... Atrix made a good point about that as well. I think it'd help me, well, cope with things, I guess. Make this city feel like home, since it will have to be from now on. There's a lot out here that I don't understand, but the one thing I've found is that tending a bar is the same wherever you go."

He shrugs at your final question. "I guess we will figure things out as we go, hm?"

Josie & Velasco's Conversation
"Tsk tsk, your time away has injured your optimism. We shall see a new dawn, and celebrate under the glow of the sun." Azmati gives his widest smile yet. With a start, he pulls one of the kegs down from its stack, hefting it over a burly shoulder. "Stay here for now. I will have Krendal meet you soon."

About ten minutes pass, after which you hear the creak of the plank stairs again. Krendal appears, her dark brown complexion reflecting the candle-light; her dark, tangly hair pulled back out of her face. She looks at Velasco first, then her eyebrows raise as she turns to Josie.

"Ah," she manages, cocking her head to the side. "Not one agent returned, but two — and very much alive to tell her story." The orcish woman licks her thin lips, letting out a slight sigh. "Welcome home, Josie. We were worried we lost you for good." Krendal turns to Velasco. "We received your message days ago. Those others outside, do they all truly mean to join our efforts? Pardon my skepticism, but it is strange to send out two agents, yet ten return."

Josie looks to her handler with a mixture of relief and embarrassment, having been gone so long due to her own folly. "Not yet," she responds to the woman, offering a weak smile in response to the welcome. "Though this land has certainly made numerous attempts on my life since we last met. It has been a very interesting few months," she continues, letting out a sigh of her own. Listening as the woman questions her young companion, she opts not to respond for him this time, instead watching to see what he will say, and if she needs to make any further clarifications. He is young, but he has spirit. We should all be thankful for his help, as unexpected as it was.

Velasco tempered himself as he waited on Krendal's return - He thought long about his travels, the places he's seen, the people he's met. What have I done that's taken me to this moment? He asks himself, before hearing the creaking of the stairs once more. He looks up at Krendal, a soft smile crosses his face for a moment. "I think some of them may depart from here - A few were just looking for safe travel, Josie helped save them, and I don't believe they know all of what we are-" He glances at her, definitely hesitating a bit at his words. "Though a few of them seem dedicated, and I would vouch for them being more than useful members of the Unfettered." He says, blinking a few times as he feels a small twitch in his hand, but tries to let the anxiety subside. "We did collect quite a number of allies on the journey."

Krendal listens carefully to each of you in turn, nodding as she does. "Cymren came with me. He will speak to your companions above. We will provide aid to those who need it and send them on their way. The ones who decide to stay behind will be vetted further." She offers Velasco a wan smile.

The Shivani turns to Josie. "Tell me about your journeys. The last we heard was months ago, and then nothing, until now. Were you detained?" She pauses, putting a hand on your knee in a gentle manner. "Are you alright?" she asks, softer.

Velasco nodded, going quiet to let Josie have her moment.

Josie looks to the woman, sighing again at her question, before she begins to regale her with the tale. “I was not careful enough. A mark had set an ambush for me, and I was sent to the Hole. I was there for months, toiling away in their mines as a slave, until a handful of us - many of whom are in the room above - saw an opportunity to escape. We did, and later found out that some other prisoners we knew had been experimented on and made extremely violent by some of the Hole’s leadership.”

She pauses a moment, both to allow for time for her words to sink in, as well as to decide what to say next. “There is much more to it than that, but to summarize our last few weeks, we - the surviving escapees - encountered Velasco on the road, did some odd jobs to earn coin to clothe and feed ourself, then headed here. The plan was not originally to all come, but the group of us have grown close in our travels, enough so that several of them are now willing to throw their lot in with us and fight the good fight.” She looks to Krendal, curious to see how the woman will respond to her tale. Hopefully the vetting goes well. I know some of them can come across as abrasive.

"That is... quite the journey you've had. I feel deep sorrow for the months that were stolen from you," Krendal says, concern in her eyes. "It is good that Velasco found you, then. I am sure that Cymren will find something of worth in your companions, should they truly be concerned for our struggle."

She takes a deep breath and sighs, putting her hands into her lap. "We had heard rumors of an escape from the Hole, though we could not uncover further details from our usual sources. The aristocracy of Razak as well as the officials at Kelbis must be brooding over the news, keeping it close to their chests. Did you encounter any trouble along the way? You appear to have brought quite the armed accompaniment along with you."

“Thank you,” Josie responds, appreciative of the concern despite finding it somewhat embarrassing all the same. “The escape itself was… surprisingly uneventful. Very minor hiccups, but nothing that the group of us couldn’t handle. Most of the trouble came after the escape,” she continues, as her memories of the still relatively-recent events begin to flood back once more.

“One of the prisoners they experimented on went on a rampage, attacking people on sight and spreading terror in the countryside. We came across slavers - led by Kavox Pruul, no less - who sought us as easy prey. They found us not so easy to take, and though we had our own casualties, we took the bastard’s head,” the woman continues, smirking with a sense of pride as she remembers the death of the notorious man. The world is better off without his ilk roaming it.

Krendal listens intently, her eyes widening at the mention of Kavox Pruul. "Freshly escaped, and you still took down that tyrant? A twist of fate, assuredly. We have removed one name from the board thanks to your efforts. You, and your serendipitous companions." Her mouth purses as she pauses a moment. "Do you still have it? The man's head? I have no barbarous schemes afoot with it, but I'm sure the fool had a bounty somewhere in the Ghrystbehn."

Josie crinkles her nose as she is reminded of the smell of the rotten head, the smell they can only escape when they stop in a town to camp. "Unfortunately," she responds, a look of disgust on her face, both at the sight and scent, as well as the nature of the man who used to own it. "I figured I'd bring it back here, but I didn't expect all the detours we took getting here, so it is a bit rancid now."

Krendal nods seriously. "Good. Your return brings fortune in double, then. And I fear it is sorely needed. Our operations have been... somewhat inhibited in the weeks past. We have seen some elevated turnover in our road agents, undoubtedly due to the increase in banditry afoot as well as scattered reports that the Iron Tide is active once more. The two of you — along with whichever souls Cymren brings forward from your comapanions — could not have come at a better time."

"We encountered them ourselves," Josie responds, a scowl briefly appearing on her face as she remembers in detail the events of days prior, and the haughtiness of the young leader of the elves. "We'd come across two men who murdered a merchant and took his wagon full of wares, then tried to pass them off as their own to sell. We apprehended them and were escorting them here to face trial, but the Iron Tide forced a different ending to their story than we'd have preferred. The elven murderer they released and recruited to their cause, the orcish one they murdered on the spot in cold blood. They then had the audacity to call this result justice," she continues, her anger at the man building once more, as it had in the moment that day. He will do well to keep his guards close, he won't survive our next encounter otherwise.

Krendal winces at your retelling of the moments, looking down to the stone floor momentarily. "They see justice through a cracked lens." Regaining her composure, she looks back up to the Amkharan. "You have encountered a life's worth of struggles in a few short months it seems. Is that the cart on the road that I saw? The slain merchant's?"

"Yes," Josie responds, having not quite thought about the fact they'd been traveling with the cart still. "His records indicated he'd last been in Vyridis, so someone here must know him and, hopefully, have a way of directing his belongings back to his family. All we took from it was some food, but the rest of his wares - that which the murderers hadn't taken or sold, at least - should all still be there."

Krendal nods, taking a deep breath. "I shall have the cart dealt with. I'm sure we can find out whose it was and locate his kin. You may want to let your companions above know, however, so they don't believe it's being stolen for the second time."

She sits for a moment, clattering her teeth together as she appears to work through the news. "I will need to meet with our leadership to discuss your report. You did excellent work — the both of you," the Shivani offers, giving you each a meaningful look. "Take two days to yourself. Rest. Walk the river. Can I count on you to be ready for the next task after that?" Krendal smiles wanly. "I apologize for the quick turnaround. I mentioned all the problems afoot, but haven't mentioned the good. There's an... opportunity we may be able to take, now that you are back. I can explain more later."

"Of course," Josie responds. "A couple days rest will do everyone good. Where shall we meet for the next task? Or is that information to come later?" Sleep in my own bed, oh how I've missed it. And... maybe this time I'll have company, the woman thinks, unsure of where her companionship with Cassandra is going, or if the woman would have interest in seeing her meager home. It will be a welcome homecoming either way.

"Later," Krendal confirms. "There are many plans in formation, and your triumphant arrival will undoubtedly change some of their trajectories." A pause: "For the better, of course," she says with a smile.

"Is there anything else you can thing to report? If not, then I am sure we will have more questions of you in the coming days. Your experiences in the Kelbis Mines may be helpful intelligence."

Velasco sits quietly as Josie explains, then as Krendal gives him room to speak, he says; "After I met our group of escapees in Poduz, our road took us to Hadibair, and then up the stream to Razak. There was a rider who seemed interested in our approach, and seemed to be heading in the reverse direction that we were... though when he spotted our raft, he turned back toward Razak quickly. I can't remember if we came across them again. Our time in Razak was short, but came to an abrupt end as our group was recognized by the town's guard, and we were attacked as we left the city to head back here. Unfortunately, most of our number were caught up in it and only saved by the appearance of another criminal who chose to attack the guards. It is unlikely any of us could travel the Ghrystbehn safely moving forward." He says, sighing softly.

"There is one up there, as well, Lin- It was a mistake to bring him here, and my arrogance has also, at least for a time, probably made it so he cannot return home either. I don't think he would be open to joining the Unfettered, but he was seen with us as we left." He sighs softly, unable to look up at Krendal. "Amongst many errors I made during our trip, that was possibly my most dire, bringing someone who is not guaranteed to be trusted along with us back to Vyridis, blinded by love." His face darkened slightly, finally looking up at Krendal; "I promised I would tell him everything when we arrived here, though I have not yet. I recognized that I should speak to you first, and at least dispense the last of my usefulness before taking such a risk." He says, lowering his voice slightly, hoping that this would not be as grave of a decision as it seemed in his head.

Krendal takes a long breath, sighing deeply, as she listens to your report. "If the guards were on alert in Razak, then it is likely that the officials in Kelbis have placed notice or even a bounty out with the other territories for your re-capture. It is far too dangerous to send you back to the Ghryst, at least for the time being." She places a hand on the back of her neck, the sudden distance in her stare indicating some calculation happening in her mind. After a moment she focuses back on you. "If it wasn't settled before, it is now. Your days of running solo are over, as fortunate or unfortunate as that might be for either of you."

"And as for your Lin," Krendal says, a stern look returning to her face, her posture rigid. "You have indeed acted foolishly in this endeavor, that is assured. We can make no guarantees nor promise any formal accommodations for this person. If they cannot be trusted or trained, then they will not be welcome. But that demands a discussion between Cymren, and Lin, and not the three of us can interfere with that."

"For what is worth, and... I'm not sure if such things can be measured and weighed, but you did bring a haul of bright-eyed potential recruits to our doorstep. If there are reprimands in order — or perhaps, when, I should say — then they shall be considered alongside those heartening deeds also committed."

Velasco nodded quietly. "May I speak with Lin privately before Cymren discusses the situation with them? I would feel better at least telling him myself. It's my fault he's here, Cymren shouldn't be forced to take all of that themself." He asks, looking up at Krendal, "And... can we at least give Lin accommodations until things are decided?" He leans forward. "Please. I don't want to shove him off the doorstep when we've just arrived."

Krendal stares long and hard at Velasco. "Yes, provided you do not further complicate proceedings. Let this person answer truthfully, and decide for themselves what their life demands of them now. Though you had better return quickly. Cymren is likely performing a full questioning of your companions as we speak."

"As for accommodations, you are welcome to provide your own for your companion. If that is not tenable, then the Temple of the Mother will always provide to those in need."

Velasco nods, sighing softly. "Thank you. I will." He says, quickly excusing himself from the room to go find Lin.

Krendal watches the young Serranborn ascend the steps once more, waiting for sound of his footfalls to fade into the muffled creaks above. She turns to Josie. "Is his... paramour situation as much a problem as it sounds?" the orcish woman asks, her eyebrows raised in weary concern.

"Lin has seen a lot these last several days, and I doubt think he had any real idea what he was getting into when they were invited to come with us," she responds, frowning at the though of the poor young man's current lot. "He was just the bartender at a tavern we visited a few times, I'd no idea they had become involved until it was time to leave Razak, and by then we were - unknown to us at the time - being pursued by the local guard. We did not leave that city on good terms at all, and barely managed to flee the pursuing guards. Then we encountered the murders, then the Iron Tide, all while traveling with few rations and little in the way of comfort. I do not think he has been having a good time at all, but it has not really been any of our place to tell young Velasco what to do with his romantic life," she finishes, shaking her head.

The Shivani nods. "It is not our business, until it becomes our business," she explains. "However much Lin knows about our operations now makes us vulnerable should he pass that along to other parties. And yet, we are not in the business of throwing away wayward and displaced people. I trust that Velasco now knows the danger in which he has placed his companion, and will take further precautions accordingly."

She looks up at you, curiously. "Would you keep an eye out, regardless? Let me know if Velasco's behavior is unbefitting of an agent, or if he is exposing our flank."

Josie nods, though inside she feels her heart sink a little, as her task borne of necessity becomes an assignment in its own right. Forever tasked to babysit the young man. How much simpler this path was before I was captured and was free to hunt alone. She sighs, saying, "he is young and brash, but clearly well-meaning and passionate about the cause. I will keep watch, but I do not fear he has any desire to bring danger towards us. Especially now, after witnessing the reaction of his lover to these past events, I feel he will be even more cautious going forward." At least I hope so.

"Good, then the matter is settled." She stands from the table. "Anything else to report? If not, then I will be on my way. Your return heralds many things, and I need to see to them. Leave the tyrant's head down here. I will have Azmati pack it and it will be dealt with soon enough."

"No, that is all," Josie responds. "I have my own..." What even would I call her? Companion, sure. I don't know. How does this sort of thing come so easy to Velasco? So sure of things despite all the difficulties and complications. "Person to get back to, too. I will await word from you in the coming days."

Krendal hms in acknowledgement. "Get some rest, some food, and a stiff drink. You've earned it," she says, a warm smile breaking through the strict demeanor. "See you soon." She climbs the stairs, leaving you alone in the cellar for the moment.
Josie
After waiting a minute or two, you climb the stairs as well. The tavern above has grown a few patrons, though is still far from capacity. Alerio, Atrix, and Cassandra share a drink at the bartop, while Velasco has pulled Lin over to a table in the far corner — clearly in the middle of a deep, private discussion.

Cymren comes down the stairs, stopping for a brief moment to look at Josie, to which he gives her a curt nod before continuing. "I will be back, Azmati. Hold that drink for now," he calls over to the barkeep in a casual tone, before disappearing out the front doors again.
Alerio, Atrix, Velasco
A minute after Velasco has returned from the cellar, Krendal, the handler, reappears as well, before she promptly takes leave through the main doors. She is followed by Josie a minute later, who returns to the tavern floor once more.

Cymren comes down the stairs, stopping for a brief moment to look at Josie, to which he gives her a curt nod before continuing. "I will be back, Azmati. Hold that drink for now," he calls over to the barkeep in a casual tone, before disappearing out the front doors again.

Off to see his master no doubt, Atrix thinks as Cymren disappears out of the doors. Even Unfettered answer to someone.

Seeing Josie emerge from the cellar, Atrix raises his cup in her direction. "Nice of you to rejoin us. I trust you found the perfect keg to tap next?" He says with a slight smirk, still somewhat amused by the Unfettered's way of doing things.

Velasco, after his conversation with Lin, returns to the bar with him. He gets a drink from the barkeep and finds a seat, giving the others a wan smile. The exhaustion of the long trip, and his anxiety about the conversation with Lin finally begins to catch up to him. He reaches out to hold Lin's hand again, happy that the conversation went well.

"You are returned. Good," Alerio says, giving Josie an acknowledging nod. Perhaps she has become accustomed to the smoke and mirror of her operation. It will be an adjustment for myself, he thinks as Atrix's words linger on his ears. To operate in the dark is foreign to the zealous, but this is still a righteous cause and my path forward.

"Yes, all is arranged. They should be providing food and lodging for you, and we are to receive an assignment in a couple days' time. Apparently my return 'changes things,' so I am curious to see what that means for us," she continues, glad to be done with the semi-interrogation and back with her companions.

Gazing across the room, she finds Cassandra among the others, and approaches. "Hey," she says, as she gets closer. "You will have a place to sleep either way, but if you want, you could..." she continues, second-guessing herself for a moment, before deciding to finish her though. "Well, there is room, if you wanted, uh... with me."

Back at the bar now, Lin sits quietly next to Velasco, seemingly content to watch the barkeep work and share a quiet word every so often with the Serranborn.

Cassandra eyes Josie with quiet curiosity as the Amkharan is the last to come back up the cellar stairs. "Yeah?" she says, narrowing her eyes at you in a mock-scowl. "Spit it out, girl. You're asking me if I want to shack up with you?" The Ghrystani shrugs, a grin growing on her face. "Well, it sure beats roughing it on the trails. I guess I could." She pauses. "Where?"

Josie is taken aback by the woman's tone, but quickly realizes the jest and offers a small smile in response. "I have a room in the home of a family I know. I'll show you," she continues, offering the woman her hand. Of course that is here response. She is always so direct. I could learn to be more so, I suppose.

"A rented room and not a tavern closet? You're certainly living large," Cassandra says, her eyebrows raised. She takes Josie's hand, but peers around for a moment, her voice lowered as she continues.
Josie
"Atrix and Alerio spoke to that gruff-looking fellow. But then he just... left before he talked to the rest of us. What should I do? And, did they say anything about what we should do with the cart we rescued?"

Josie
"Oh," Josie responds, eyes widening slightly at the woman's response. "They haven't interviewed you yet? Best we wait for that first, then," she continues. "It should be short and easy though. I will wait here until you're done, then we can head over. It isn't much, but I don't know," she continues, once more feeling less sure of herself than she'd like to. "I thought you might like to see my home. And it certainly does beat a tavern closet," she responds, offering a sly grin with the last words.

At mention of the cart she says, "oh, yes. My handler said they would send someone to gather it and work to locate the owner's family. We need not worry about it any longer, it will find its way back where it belongs."

Josie
Cassandra smiles widely. "I'm sure it's special. I've missed having my own place to lay my head. We can go whenever I'm cleared to go, I guess." She pours another flagon of the ale and hands it to you. "Until then, let's celebrate the journey's end for now."

Afternoon comes, and with it, the rest of your traveling party from the stable and cart duties outside. Azmati, the bartender, brings out a few platters of food to serve you — a soft and mild cheese, dried and cured pork re-boiled in broth, warm bread, fresh greens, and some sort of fermented bean paste to go with it all.

At some point, Vanthar quietly reports that the cart has been hauled away by your benefactors.

In the late afternoon, you are given several rooms by Azmati, who insists the expenses have been covered, on top of the bar bill as well. The grizzled, scarred elvish-orcish man (some know as Cymren) returns, sitting a long moment at the bar. As a few among your group retire for the night, Cymren seems to linger — visiting a few of them in the quiet parts of the evening.

Josie's Converation
You leave the Missing Talon Tavern, Cassandra in tow. The humid air of Vyridis has finally begun to cool off now at dusk. She walks alongside you, letting you lead the way, her cheeks somewhat flush with the glow of a couple flagons of ale. "It feels nice to be back in a city again. The long roads are their own beauty, but damn if they aren't tough."

"It is," Josie responds, half-truthfully, as the woman brings up the city. "I rarely miss it when I am away on assignment, but it always feels nice to return. It is the closest thing I have to a home in this land, and I likely won't ever see my true home again, so being back here and returning to my home - as small as it may be - is always nice." She pauses, before turning to face the redhead more directly. "I've never actually brought anyone back to it before. I hope it is to your liking," she continues, offering a soft smile, finding it easier to be more honest when the two of them are alone, away from the prying eyes and ears of their companions.

"A home away from home, then," Cassandra offers with a chuckle. "Even the smallest, most inconsequential places can feel like home, given time and thought. To be honest, my cell was that for me. A spot free from the labor, the chatter, the light. Where I could be in what little peace we were offered."

She sighs, chuckling again. "Sorry, I don't know why I brought that up. I want to talk about you, and your home. I'm sure it's a mess, but I don't care. Being gone for months is a pretty good excuse, turns out."

After several minutes walking through the city, you turn on a small lane overlooking the northern bend of the river. There are a few smaller farms in this stretch — simpler homes but still well-maintained. You take the last few turns before you see it. Home.

Josie chuckles as well. "I hope it's not a mess. I leave it pretty clean when I leave, it makes coming back feel all the more relieving. Though it is likely quite dusty," she muses, imaging how many cobwebs and how much dust must have accumulated in her time away. "To be honest, I don't have much there. Just my clothing, my bed, and a small shrine. I never really needed much else, I am never usually there for long."

As the house ahead comes into view, she motions towards it with her head. "There it is," she continues, with a smile again. "The family who owns it was once enslaved. When freed, they offered to let me stay with them once they had their own place. They didn't really take no for an answer, so that's how I got a small room out here rather than in some cheap tavern like most of the rest of us. The Unfettered is not exactly a way to make money."

"Then I suppose it's lucky that I learned a few things from my father of a merchant," Cassandra says. "I've always wanted to build a home of my own one day, but we never stayed long enough in any one city to make that a reality."

She follows closely as you approach the side of the house, toward a wooden staircase on the exterior wall. The dim candle-light from within the main quarters gives you reason to believe the family has settled in for the night. You climb the staircase, which brings you up and between the house and the small barn. From what you were told, your loft room was built into the converted barn attic many years ago. You open the door and head in.

Inside, the rustic yet cozy room is in the same state you left it, albeit dusty and full of webs as you had expected. A few candles are lit, a bit of light dusting from both of you, and soon it is almost easy to forget you've not been here in months.

“A proper home sounds nice,” Josie muses, having never given the idea much though. “I have no idea what that’s like. I can’t say I’ve ever had anything more than a room in a place that wasn’t mine. I don’t really know what I’d do with all the space if I had one.”

“Well, this is it,” she says once they step into her meager abode, holding her hands wide in presentation. “As I said, it’s really not much, but it beats an inn.”

Once the women have finished their cleaning, Josie takes a seat on the bed and slowly begins to remove the pins holding her long hair up. “I, uh,” she begins, not really sure what to say or do in the scenario she finds herself in. “I know we are still not that close I guess, I don’t know. But I like your company, and if you wanted to stay here with me, I think it would be nice.” She pauses, not sure what else to say, and feeling abnormally vulnerable for one otherwise so cold and distant to most.

“Is that something you’d want?” She asks, as the last of the pins is removed and set on her bedside table, allowing her hair to flow free for the first time in several days. She then places them in a small drawer, making sure to arrange them neatly, finding it easier to bear the embarrassing baring of her confusing feelings when she has a task to focus. I really do not know how to read her. Does she even think of me? She must, she followed me here.

"It's not bad. Kind of cute for a barn loft. Much cleaner than I'd guessed," Cassandra says, peering around the cozy space. She listens to you, her eyes on you as you take the pins out and fiddle with them in the drawer. "Your hair is really pretty, you know? You should wear it down more. I can teach you how to braid it, if you want." She runs a gentle hand through it, her hand tracing your ear, jawline, then finding your chin. With a soft motion, she turns you away from your task to face her, before leaning forward and kissing you.

Atrix' Conversation
Eventually, you retire to your room on the second story. Its furnishings are quite modest, a near-replica of the room you met Cymren in. Even still, the privacy, safety, and comfort is leagues above the past several days out on the trail.

After dusk, a knock at your door comes. When you answer, there is an unfamiliar, young, orcish man standing outside it. He wears a simple tunic; belted at the waist is a short sword. He is tall, with hawkish features, and somewhat handsome. "You are Atrix, no? My name is Agirri. May I enter?"

Atrix nods and pushes the door open further, heading back into his room, expecting Airri to follow. He takes a seat, waiting for the young orc to follow and join him.

"Thank you." Agirri enters, closing the door behind him. He takes a seat opposite you. "Your deal has been considered by our leadership," he says. "They agreed upon it. I was sent here to inform you of the news." He drums his fingers silently on the table-top, his eyes following you closely.

"That is good to hear," the Cru'unii responds. "When will I be leaving?" He asks. I'm surprised they send this young pup, surely there are still the details to work out.

"The morning after tomorrow," Agirri responds. "We have a boat now, but we shall have a crew then. They will take you to your home in Cru'un, where they've been instructed to wait two days before they sail for Vyridis once more. Should you agree to the terms, that would mean that ample funding and, hopefully, freefolk shall also be sailing back, including yourself."

"My wife remains a slave in these lands - I will return," Atrix replies. "That is acceptable though," he adds. "I wouldn't mind some assurances of safety though, I fear that outside of your leadership there could be done that might react... rashly, should they take who I am," he continues, still not even sure how his companions of the last couple weeks will react to the news.

Agirri cocks his head to the side at your request. "You have made it this far unharmed and unharassed, haven't you? This arrangement needs to be built on trust. Our organization is already extending you quite the favor, sailing you across the Borstid. I'm sure you understand, as a businessman yourself: the amount of resources that requires is no small venture. I am told by Cymren that you seem to be a pragmatic man, so consider that my leaders would not go through all of this effort only to spoil that goodwill for our agents to exact petty justice."

"I would argue it is no selfless favor on your part, but very well. I see your point," Atrix replies, satisfied with effectively getting the answer he wanted. "I shall await further word then," he adds a he stands, expecting Agirri to follow suit.

Agirri follow suit, standing up from the table. "There is one more thing, however. Being that you are part of our network now, your attendance is sought for a meeting tomorrow night. The charcoal warehouse. Josie and Velasco should know where. It is... unusual for a gathering to take place in such size as this one, but as I'm sure you understand, these are odd times for many of us. The rest of your companions — the ones that seek to join our numbers, that is — will be coming too." He gives you an odd smile. "Consider it a privilege, given your history. Have you spoken to any of them about your plans, speaking of?"

"I will be there then," Atrix replies briefly, ignoring Agirri's mention of his history. I suppose my plan being revealed in a group setting, coming from the leadership is a good a assurance of safety as any.

"I will see you then I suppose, and no I have not. I have kept my history from them so far," he says.

"They will learn eventually, as will many of our people," Agirri warns. "My personal wisdom? It may be better if they hear it from you first." He grins, a hint of smugness coming through before it disappears. "See you tomorrow night. I wish you luck and safety during your journey, as do our leaders."

Day 24

Josie
In the morning, you and Cassandra wake. After a quiet moment together, you get dressed, lock up, and head back for the tavern. You see the father of the family you board with as you depart — his face awash with surprise, then relief as he gives you a hearty wave.

Back at the tavern, you find the rest of your companions next-door, in a loose throng near the stables, and you move to join them.

"I'm headed west," Vanthar says curtly, once you have all gathered. "Soon as those storms let up, at least. There's tracking work for the Imardanian colonies. Pays well, I'm told."

"Thanks for getting us here," Cassandra says to her former labormate during their time in the Hole. "I hope we run into you again some day."

The stoic scout shrugs. "I hope under better circumstances, next time." He nods, patting her sternly on the shoulder. She smiles softly, squeezing his hand.

"I've decided to stay here, for now. The Temple of the Mother needs volunteers," Tuya offers. "I will assist there until I can find more about where my family was taken."
Alerio, Velasco, Atrix
In the morning, you wake from your rented room, the quiet night's rest a blessing after the long fortnight on the trails.

Eventually you get up and dress and head down the tavern level, the others slowly filtering in after doing the same. Breakfast is laid out by Azmati, already hard at work. There are fresh eggs, fried bacon lardons, a flatbread not dissimilar to the kind from Hadibair, and freshly-pressed juice. You mull around, quiet murmurs mixing amongst you as news of Cymren's visits spreads. The moment you had long suspected has come — it is time for some of you to part ways.

You muster outside, near the stables, where the passersby are few and the braying of the horses helps mask your discussions. As you do, you notice Josie and Cassandra approach from further down the road and join your loose throng.

Pōhaku, Gladia, Hadrurus
Yzgo leaves you to continue your training, apparently satisfied with Gladia's performance and motivation for now. The rest of the day is a continuation of sparring, duels, and a bit of conditioning. For once, it almost feels like you are back in the Tjordek — training, fighting, boasting amongst each other.

The next couple days, Gladia spends her time mostly to herself in the barracks, save for a few other Unfettered agents who pass through to catch a night's sleep, mend their gear, or get some training in. Pōhaku and Hadrurus join Gladia in the mornings for a few hours of drills and chatter, before the two agents leave to perform their daily duties for the afternoons.

This particular morning the three of you sit outside the workshop, having been practicing hand-to-hand. Bruised and sweating, you catch your breath in quiet respite amongst the nature around you. The morning air is crisp. Dew glistens on the grasses and weeds; the river runs nearby as you spot a family of ducks swimming upstream.

You find yourself sharing the remote, communal space with two more Unfettered members this morning. Pōhaku and Hadrurus recognize them as Samiira and Kaulitz — two solo agents who couldn't be further apart in terms of personality. The former, a Serranborn woman, is somewhat reserved and standoffish while the latter, a Kurnish man, is quite expressive and chipper, and apparently a gossip.

As you rest, Samiira tends to her blades quietly by a grindstone while Kaulitz is at the range, practicing targets. He launches a volley of arrows, then shrugs, before turning your way. "You lot hear the big news yet? Kavox Pruul finally bit the dust," he explains. "And listen to this: you, uh, know that Amkharan gal? Josie. Turns out she's not dead, just got thrown in the Hole. Anyways, she broke out and got that fucker. Brought his head back, too. Velasco was part of it, I heard. Guess that guy is useful for something after all."

"Hmm. Pruul is dead? That's some good news, I'll have to take him off my list," Samiira replies to Kaulitz, not taking her eyes off the task at hand. "Velasco? He may have been there, but I doubt he had much to do with it," she adds.
Pōhaku & Hadrurus
Kavox Pruul is familiar to you. As a single slaver operator, he doesn't stand out much against the larger organizations who are overall more dangerous throughout the Ghrystbehn. However, the brutality of this single dwarf punches well above his weight, and many know of him regardless. It is no large surprise he is dead, seeing how rampant and independent he was, but it is still a blessing to know another slaving bastard is crossed off the list.

Agirri's words play on Atrix's thoughts that night, although he gets no closer to a decision.

"Safe travels," Atrix says to Vanthar, giving him a curt nod. For a moment he considers giving him Ocasa, but decides against it, certain the Unfettered will be able to put the horse to good use.

"I'm sure we will all keep an ear open and let you know if we hear anything of their whereabouts," he says in reply to Tuya.

He waits for others to say their goodbyes, before the Cru'unii turns to Joise and Velasco and lowers his voice. "I was invited to a meeting tonight at the charcoal warehouse. I was told you know where that is," he says.

"Kavox Pruul was a scourge, and his absence is a relief to all who've suffered at his hands. But let's not rest on our laurels. There are more like him out there, and we've got a long road ahead. This is a small victory, but it's a sign that our fight is making a difference. We'll keep pushing forward until every slaver, big or small, is brought to justice."

Pohaku understanding that their mission is far from over. He remains focused on the larger goal of eradicating the slave trade and bringing about a world where no one else has to endure the horrors he faced.

"If master Pruul is dead, than today is a happy day. Let's hope he was able to witness his beheading, and that it took a couple of swings." Hadrurus continues checking his gear, now smiling ear to ear.

Pōhaku, Gladia, Hadrurus
Samiira lets out a small chuckle at Hadrurus' words. "You must be the new blood," she says to Gladia. "It's been a while since I've been in Vyridis, but still — I've not seen your face before."

"There's no physical list," the Serranborn woman explains. "I get into places others can't and kill people the Unfettered need killing. Pruul is just someone I now don't have to worry about."

"I heard he was the biggest dwarf this side of the mountains," Kaulitz says at Hadrurus. "Might have taken a few swings for a neck like that."

"May Eagle's winds bring you swiftness and safety on your journey," the Talon says to Vanthar with a nod, a touch saddened to say farewell to a travel companion for so long. His expression remains stoic, however.

Turning to Tuya, he says, "They will benefit immensely from your talents, I am certain. May you find the answers you are looking for."

Velasco glances at Alerio for a moment, before looking back at Tuya and Vanthar. "Ravens do not forget the kindness of others. May you be blessed by the generosity of the dark; your backs never be watched by evil eyes." He gives a small, polite bow, before wearily standing again. "I bid you a good journey, Vanthar; and for you, Tuya, bless you for your time in the temple." He leans on his cane, looking around outside, enjoying being back in Vyridis after his time away. The sounds, the colors, the smells - fresh, clean air, and a warmth begins to fill his heart.

Josie offers a small nod to Vanthar, but no words, having not enough experience with the man to know what else to say. He will do well in this organization. I hope the others do too. Turning to Tuya, she says, "I hope you do find more about them. If I learn anything, I will be sure to let you know."

Once the goodbyes are said, she turns to Atrix, matching his low tone. "Yes, I've met there several times. Did they say to come alone? I can give you directions if so, but if not I can just take you there." I wonder if only he was invited, or if the others were too. Perhaps they see something in him that they don't in the rest? Curious.

"Agirri eluded to it being an unusually large meeting. If you haven't been told of it yet I suspect that will be changing today," Atrix replies to Josie's question, keeping his voice low should any passersby walk particularly close to the group.

Alerio, Velasco, Josie, Atrix
Vanthar nods in silent thanks at your words, while Tuya bows courteously. "Thank you for allowing me to travel with you from Hadibair to this place," she says with a warm smile. "You have kind hearts. I wish you luck in your endeavors. Perhaps we shall meet again while I am here."

"I got the go-ahead from your people," Yldaren says, looking at Josie specifically. "Not sure what comes next, but I'll see you all around I'm certain."

Brelnia taps her chest with a closed fist. "Same here. Turns out they're looking for extra muscle."

"I had to show off a little bit to get that old man to believe my talents," Cassandra says with a smirk. "But I'm itching to get started as well."

Pōhaku, Gladia, Hadrurus
"Samiira," the Serranborn woman replies, giving Gladia a nod in greeting.

"And you can call me Kaulitz," the other agent says with a stage bow. "I'd say I'm a jack of all trades. And yet... you'd be surprised to know they keep sending me on the same tasks." He shoots another arrow, this time a hair short of the bulls-eye. He curses, but cracks a smile. "Another from the Tjordek Ring, huh? Well, you're in good company with these two."

Pōhaku recognizes Samiira and Kaulitz, acknowledging their shared affiliation with Vyridis. He greets them with a nod and a warm smile, showing familiarity.

"Samira, Kaulitz, good to see you both again," he says. "It's a small world, isn't it? Our paths cross once more in the name of justice. Together, we'll continue to make a difference against the slavers and their tyranny."

Alerio shoots a glare at Velasco for a moment, choosing to remain silent. What generosity does darkness bestow? Perhaps he should put more thought into his words and actions. Lin would be grateful if he did.

He gives a slight smile as the other three mention their approval to join as well. "I will look forward to having you all as dependable allies as we continue walking this path."

Velasco rubs the back of his neck softly as he hears the follow-ups of his recent traveling companions. He hoped, somewhat, that Yldaren wouldn't be welcome here, but knowing that he is... Worrying. Perhaps Yldaren didn't tell them about his previous employment. He gritted his teeth slightly. In an effort to calm himself, he looked over quickly at Lin, smiling as he lowered his voice, "Anything new from you?" He asks, tilting his head a bit, hoping for good news.

"We will have to share stories of our missions next time we meet up," Josie says, offering the others a rare genuine smile. It is good they were all accepted. They may come from all walks of life, but so too do the rest of us. They will certainly make good additions to the cause. At Velasco's question to Lin, she turns to listen to the response, curious what sort of conversations the young man had, but certain she knows the response after her prior conversation with Krendal.

Alerio, Velasco, Josie, Atrix
Lin looks at Velasco sheepishly for a moment, seeming to feel the eyes on him. "Uh, no," he says softly. "I spoke to him, that soldier. We both agreed I'm not suited for this, at least not the same way you are. Maybe I can serve in other ways, one day, but for now I just want to... well, figure my life out."

He sighs hopefully. "It was nice to meet you all. I'm sure I will see some of you around, as soon as I can get a job at one of the local taverns."

Vanthar gives a polite nod and a wave, making his way down the road. Tuya wishes you luck and good tidings warmly, before setting off in a different direction.

In the coming-and-going, a passerby bumps into Josie. "My apologies, madame," he offers, brushing the dirt off his knee as he stands back up. He is a middle-aged dwarven man, with brown hair and a clean shave. He looks to be hauling a load of books. "Here, you must have dropped this." The man hands you a small scrap of parchment that is now sporting his boot mark. He steps way at a brisk pace, humming an upbeat tune.
Josie
The scrap of parchment is torn from a larger one. In scrawled Grystok, it reads: Meeting at the barracks, dusk. Spread word to those old and new among you.

Pōhaku, Gladia, Hadrurus
The three of you chatter idly for a moment longer with the two Unfettered vets, before there's another arrival: a young orcish man, in a simple tunic, with a short sword belted at the waist. Pōhaku and Hadrurus recognize him as Agirri, one of this year's recruits who's already making waves among the Unfettered leadership. Coming from Razak, it seems that he's been groomed for logistical duties, like Krendal.

"Good morning all," he says politely, nodding to you. "Gladia, welcome. Yzgo spoke highly of you. My name is Agirri," he says with a courteous bow.

"I see you are all in the midst of your training — and I wouldn't dare to interrupt that. I am here with a message from our leaders: there is to be a meeting here, tonight at dusk, for any of our members in the city today. There is good news afoot, if you haven't already heard."

"Kavox Pruul, the wicked fool," Kaulitz rhymes in a sing-song tone.

Alerio frowns listening to Lin, taking pity on the young man whose life has been thrown into a spiral. May he find his peace. Perhaps a merchant might escort him home someday. With many of his now-former companions on their separate ways, the Talon lets out a sigh. I suppose one journey has finally reached its conclusion. I welcome the next, wherever it may lead.

He eyes the peculiar dwarf for a moment before turning to Josie and raising an eyebrow.

"I'm sure there'll be somewhere that can use you," Atrix says to Lin as words of encouragement. The things we do for love, he thinks, his thoughts turning to Syndra for a moment.

He is brought back to reality by the dwarf bumping into Josie.

"Anything interesting?" he asks Josie as she examines the note.

"That must be the meeting I mentioned," Atrix says to Josie.

"There is actually something I wish to tell you," the Cru'unii says, deciding to final reveal his true identity to his companions.

"I have already discussed it with Cymren, but I am from Cru'un, where the practice of slavery is still very common. Back home I am a wealthy man and do own a number of slaves, although I mean to free them as soon as I am able," he explains, looking at his companions for their reactions to the revelation. "I hid this from you, not knowing how you would react, but I am sure it will be raised at the meeting so I thought it better to tell you now," he adds.

Velasco would likely spend the day walking around with Lin, introduce him to people and stuff. Nothing that needs to be expanded upon, more just a side note of things he does.

"I see," Alerio says sternly, listening to the Cru'unish man. He frowns before giving a weighted sigh. "Slavery is morally reprehensible, and it is shameful that you have not seen this truth sooner. Yet it takes courage to admit the error in one's ways." He pauses for a moment, giving the mage a slight glance of judgment. "You must walk the path of atonement to be forgiven for such crimes against life itself. I trust you are ready."

Velasco grimaces at their traveling companion's admission, feeling a similar spark of fury as he had felt towards Yldaren. As Alerio responded, he found the strength to bite his tongue.
I can't believe we've been travelling with a slaver for this long. Two of them, even. To think that I've broken bread with two men no different than my father fills me with unease... i want to be sick. he thinks. After a moment he feels the contorted look of contempt on hos face and does his best to wipe it clean, letting Alerio spea to Atrix.

Josie listens and watches as their companion speaks, feeling a mixture of emotions, much the same as she'd felt when speaking with Yldaren. She takes a deep breath as she listens to Alerio's response, before saying her own piece. "If you are truly repentant then I cannot hold your past against you. Many in this organization have changed their ways, and if you are the same, you will know the importance of our mission more than most." And if you are merely using us as a means to an end, you can expect to never see your home or family again. I will make sure of that.

Atrix nods at Josie and Alerio's words. "I believe I will show that I am," he says in respond to both of them.

That went well, perhaps I could have told them sooner, although maybe their reactions would have been different out on the road, he wonders.

Atrix will spend the rest of the day exploring Vyridis, learning the lay of the town.
