"It seems you two have volunteered yourselves as their caretakers then," Raj remarks, eyeing the eggs with increased unease. I suppose their screams of agony will grant enough warning that no others shall be devoured.

"Gladly," the smiling Sister agrees. She turns to Doran and gives him a nod, before setting the egg back carefully into the nest. "I will leave it here for now, until we've deemed the area safe enough to handle such sensitive cargo."

Now that we seem to be alone, at least for now, are there any doors we haven't opened yet on this floor? Does it seem like there could be more below us?

Taliesin
Looking around, you don't see any readily apparent doors or ways into another part of the ship. You are aware there should be at least another deck beneath you though.

"If they become too much of a threat, we just put a bullet between their eyes," Heidi responds to Raj, at his worries over the young wyverns. "Meat's meat. If they seek to make us meals, we can just return the favor. And if not, those two can have their... pets." Mostly ignoring the nest itself, she steps forward to get a closer look at the trapdoor underneath.

"That said, their nest covers our way deeper into the vessel," she continues, pointing towards the barely-visible portion of the trapdoor underneath the tangled mess that makes up the nest. "So we ought to move them out of the way to proceed further, unless we want to try our luck with that rusted grate again." They're small, they shouldn't be too hard to move. Let the prospective pet-owners carry them, they seem keen enough.

"A fair point," Raj responds to Heidi's blunt truths. "Perhaps they'll taste like chicken, or alligator." Battered and fried in scalding oil. Delicious. He circles the nest, curious if the way deeper is truly beneath.

"Let us not forget the aftcastle's door, should this route fail. It seemed intact, if we're able to remove the crates that block it."

Enough talk of who is eating who, Armantine wishes. "You can carve a drumstick off the ones down there, if you'd like." She gives Raj a smile. "But this one's hands-off."

She takes one of the eggs, putting it into a sack and padding it with her bedroll. She stows the mess back into her pack, awaiting Doran to do the same.

Sister Armantine and Doran stow the two eggs safely away in their packs. The nest now sits empty atop the trapdoor, the weave of debris and plant matter barring your way.

With the efforts of Doran, Sister Armantine, and Heidi, the nest begins to break apart and you are able to remove it piece by piece until the trapdoor beneath is fully exposed. A single, slightly rusted, metal ring appears to serve as a handle.

Sister Armantine gives the trapdoor a hefty tug. "Let's see what those wyverns were hiding beneath you..."

Sister Armantine is able to lift the trapdoor up, its hinges creaking as the movement shakes the several years of rust from them, to reveal a path deeper into the bowels of the ship. A musty odor rises up to meet your nostrils as the stale air of the lower decks is released from its confines.

A wooden ladder leads down from the trapdoor, but the light from your level is only enough to reveal a small area around its base on another wooden deck about 7 feet beneath you. The rest of the room remains shrouded in an inky darkness.

"After you," Armantine says, peering up at the others, as she holds the trapdoor open for them. I'll never shy away from danger, but I certainly won't walk headlong into it.

Raj wrinkles his nose at the musty scent wafts past him, tilting his head down into the underbelly of the ship. Still more pleasant a smell than the vilest merchants in the city. Even as some practically bathe in jasmine oil. He grimaces.

"Very well," the man says, pulling a lantern from his pack. He hops down the trapdoor, igniting the lantern after his feet thud against the deck. He lets the warm glow illuminate the area, peering around for any sign of danger.

The room you find yourselves in appears to be another crew compartment, similar to the one upstairs, although this room appears untouched by the denizens of the forest. Instead a thick layer of dust coats most of the hammocks and tables dotted around the room.

At the far end of the dark room, you see a door leading deeper into the ship, back towards its aft.

"A blanket of dust," Raj shouts up to those who remained at the top, sputtering through a coughing fit as the cascade of footfalls stirs up the air. "You know, someone ought to hire a maid for this place," he says with a strained smirk once his breath is regained. He brushes his clothes off, avoiding any dust sticking to the fine fabric.

Looking up the trapdoor again, he adds, "Crew quarters, if you'd care to join us. With this much undisturbed dust, it's unlikely we will find a ravenous beast."

Undisturbed is good, though unlikely we will find survivors there. We might find other things of use, though. Tools or maybe even weapons, long forgotten? At the news of the relative emptiness of the chamber below, Heidi makes her way down the ladder to join the others.

Armantine nods, following after Heidi. "Perhaps we can find some of their personal effects, find out who exactly may have been upon this vessel. Who made it off, and who didn't. I believe the expedition should have copies of the First Fleet's manifest to compare against, as well."

"If there are personal effects, they are likely just as buried as everything else," Raj says as the pair finally joins down below. "Perhaps this is how Tenants feel, knowing the sand they must sift through for the secrets they seek."

Armantine takes a moment to peer around the room, looking for anything personal that might indicate ownership of a bunk. "A few years of dust is a far cry from a shifting sand dune," she says, grinning as she rolls her eyes at the Serranborn's dramatic nature. Afraid of the water, afraid of the dust. I suppose it is the Goddess' blessing he didn't shy away from ramming a blade into the backs of those beasts.

Ignoring the minor banter, Heidi instead moves about the room, checking for any sacks, crates, chests, or other containers that might hold anything of value. A layer of dust means treasures untouched by climate and creature, so these chambers are our best bet to search. Hopefully the rooms ahead are as closed off from the sea. If so, this might be a lucrative trip after all.

Zemi and Ko are the last two down into the lower deck, with Zemi grabbing an old torch from a sconce and lighting it to complement Raj's lantern in lighting up the room. You take a few minutes to search the room, despite the layer of dust that blankets the room, most people's belongings appear to have been cleared out, with only a few errant items of clothing and a couple of dusty old books left in the footlockers and chests.

"Looks like they had time to get their things before leaving the ship," Zemi says, holding onto the mast in the centre of the room to aid her balance on the leant over ship.

"And so the mystery grows. It begs the question: did they abandon ship before or after they ran aground?" Raj says, surprised at the lack of personal effects remaining in the quarters. "Surely there would be a limit to what might fit on the rowboats, hm?" I should only hope supplies remain as well.

"It is unlikely they cleared their belongings in a dire situation, that would be foolhardy. They'd have taken them when they felt safe, and it is unlikely they felt such safety while in the immediate aftermath of a grounding. They must have come back for these. Perhaps the original settlers of the bay did so after establishing a foothold, like we have now." It is unlikely there'd have been another time. Perhaps the crew of this ship survived to start an encampment, only later to find themselves in danger. What else could make sense here? With it clear that the room holds little of value, she makes her way towards the door at the other end of the room, placing her ear to it to listen for sounds of movement on the other side.

Raj
You carefully make your way into the next room, the door only simply latched closed. You find yourself on the upper level of the ship's cargo hold. Ahead of you, sunlight streams in through the rusted iron grate on the deck. The sunlight spills down a large opening in the floor which leads to the lower level of the cargo hold. With an assortment of ropes and pulleys hanging from the ceiling around the grate.

The crates, barrels and sacks that make up the Wanderer's cargo are scattered around, having shifted with the ship running aground and coming to rest to one side of the hold with the ship's lean in its resting place against the rocks. The combination of the light from above and that of your lantern is enough to reveal the source of the noise Heidi heard. Hundreds of rats scurry about the hold, feasting themselves on what remains of the supplies in the hold, clawing at the containers to get at the contents.

You rack your brain but the only methods that come to mind are for dealing with a handful of rats rather than this many. The only option you can be sure would work is setting the ship aflame.

As you look around you do spot an ironbanded crate down in the lower level of the hold that appears to be untouched by the vermin.
