Re: Tulrissian Unification IC

Post by Fialova »

Natalia continues to take hits, now facing off against Drake as well. While Valcus fumbles after picking his sword back up, Gedric manages to easily out-maneuver his newest prey.

Go: Zara, Embla

Mechanics
[SHOW]

Valcus: shifts, picks up weapon, misses, saves

Drake: surges & avoids prone (both during Farjad's last turn), charges to (-D, 32) (31 was too far to charge) & hits, can't do actions after charge so Sohei Flurry isn't used, Bravura Presence AP -> hits, misses, readies immediate action (see mechanics above)

Rorin: misses, Bravura Presence AP -> misses, saves, grants CA

Gedric: gains THP (no save, feat provides either/or for save or THP, not both), heals & unbloodies, hits, saves

Garland Ranger 9: moves to (-T, 29). Shoots Natalia, 22 vs AC = hit for 6 damage and Garland Ranger 8 gains +2 to their next attack against Natalia.

Serran Merc 3: shifts to (B, 27). Attacks Gedric, 11 vs AC = miss.

Map Info
[SHOW]

Trees: The vibrant green portions of the map represent tree canopies, with the black sections representing their trunks (or areas not visible due to the trunks). The areas under the canopies are traversable as normal terrain. The trunks are impassable, block line of sight and line of effect, and provide superior cover. If you are unsure of whether or not a square has enough trunk in it to be impassable, just ask.

Shrubs & Underbrush: The dark green portions of the map, which are almost the same color as the grass, are various types of undergrowth that litters the forest floor. These bushes and brambles are traversable as difficult terrain, and can obscure (but not completely block) vision. As such, they provide partial concealment to all creatures and total concealment to prone creatures.

Path: The yellow portion of the map represents the path leading through the countryside and into the woods. It is traversable as normal terrain and provides no special benefits.

Character Info
[SHOW]

NPCs
Serran Veteran: Older and more battles-scarred than most of the other mercenaries, this man seems to have been through many fights in his time. Like his compatriots he wields a large falchion, though he also has a bit heavier armor in addition. Hopefully he is as skilled as he seems.

Enemies
Natalia: A ruthless killer who had posed as a noblewoman to assassinate the parents of her faux fiancee, Wilhelm von Trahl, who has now become Lord of Volberg. She wields daggers and a garrote, and based on the last fight it seems clear she utilizes poisons as well

Captain Farjad: Though clean-cut and well-dressed compared to his lackeys, Farjad appears a formidable foe. He wields two scimitars, not unlike Zara's, and his lack of scars and high position suggest he is very good at using them

Serran Mercenaries: These are apparently the best of the best of the mercenary group stationed in Greywood. Each man wields a large falchion and little armor. Some bear scars, others none, but all look like capable fighters.

Clicking her tongue at the Mercenary's wild swings, Embla jumps back away from the man, conjuring a dark globe to lob at the man.

Turning before confirming the throw, she sees Natalia attempting to run further into the forest. Oh no you don't, you sneaky shikak. Embla makes a pronounced gesture in the direction of the fleeing woman, and the falling twilight around her darkens into solid form, wrapping itself around her head and stealing her breath.

As Natalia collapses to the ground, Embla turns back to her first target and sees that her hasty throw missed its mark. Grumbling, she conjures a second shadowy globe and throws it again. This time even further off the mark.

Embla's spell envelops the assassin's head, causing her to collapse to the ground, limp and lifeless. The Imardanians look in horror as her body hits the floor, Zara's eyes on the woman as well. "No..." she mutters under her breath, dropping her swords to the ground. She rushes to Natalia's side, desperately trying to keep the woman alive for some reason.

"Sœur!" Antonio calls, a mixture of grief, rage, and disbelief clear in his words. Seeing her fall, he grips his fist tightly in the air, the sheer power of his anger increasing the pull of his void, dragging Drake towards it as well as the others already caught in its grasp. Turning to Farjad, he says, "Cette bataille est perdue. Nous devons battre en retraite maintenant, ou nous aussi allons tomber."

"À propos d'elle?"

"Elle peut se gérer. Nous devons penser à la mission." The man's last words are glum, from what anyone can tell by the tone of his voice. As soon as he utters them he turns and begins to race further into the forest, the mercenary captain close behind.

"What should we do?" one of the rangers asks, as the others begin to flee.

"Stop them in their tracks," he orders, as he and a few of his men loose a volley towards Farjad, some of them finding their marks. "Don't let them get away!" he calls, to both his men and the rest of the party.

Caelen can't help but smirk as the Imardanian dame collapses to the ground, feeling little sympathy for the woman who dug her poisoned daggers into his back. Your Elys can't help you now...

Noticing Antonio and the Captain Farjad attempting to escape, Caelen slips around the tree and and dashes after them, firing off an arrow with the speed of a falcon. Slicing through the air like a razor, the arrow soon meets its target, piercing the flesh of the fleeing Antonio.

Caelen's arrow strikes true, something that has grown easier in the last few moments, the wind having died down a bit. The sky remains as dark as ever, though, and grows darker by the minute. Despite the weather the group fights on, Garland's Rangers loosing more volleys of arrows at both the fleeing men and the ones that still fight. Antonio manages to dodge one headed his way, though another of his countrymen is not so lucky.

Valcus shouts a warning of carefulness to Zara when he sees her run across the battlefield to attend to the fallen assassin. Does she know something I don't? he asks himself, but his thoughts are interrupted with the warlock being engaged with great force. "Pick up the pace, Embla! Put this sellsword in the dirt," he cries out to her, seeing the captain and the mage making a break for it.

Holding his sword and shield in a controlled grip, the knight slides through the brush, cutting around the side to where his elvish friend is struggling with an attacker. "Chase them down, Caelen! Use those swift legs of yours," he cries out to the elf, charging toward the mercenary plaguing him. Smashing his shield into the man's face, Valcus launches a powerful kick at his leg, sending him to the forest floor. "Go!" he shouts in the elf's face, pointing his sword toward the escaping men. "I'll deal with this bastard," Valcus says menacingly, turning to face the man lying beneath him.

Gedric has grown tired of these traitorous fiends and decides the time for moderation has passed.

With a huge upward swing of his hammer he crushes the foe in front of him backwards. "Oh no you don't!" he cries as he follows his prey. After his enemy staggers back Gedric swings his weapon from on high and crumples his foe to the ground.

Quickly pivoting, he seeks out a new victim to his right and engages him with a swift, yet devastating flurry of blows.

Blood and sweat mix as Gedric's previously cocky grim morphs into a determined grimace.

Drake lets out an almighty cheer as Natalia falls. "You Imardians are no match for our Tulrissian might. Let's see what you call fighting," he shouts as he cleaves through the mercenaries either side of him with a single large swing, which he then follows up with another attack.

Combat Challenge: Every time you attack an enemy, whether the attack hits or misses, you can choose to mark that target. The mark lasts until the end of your next turn. While the target is marked, it takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls if its attack doesn't include you as a target. A creature can be subject to only one mark at a time. A new mark supersedes a mark that was already in place. Whenever an enemy marked by you is adjacent to you and shifts or makes an attack that does not include you, you can make a melee basic attack against the enemy.

Encumbered Speed: You move at your normal speed even when it would be reduced by armor or a heavy load. Other effects that limit speed (such as difficult terrain or magic) affect you normally.

Stand Your Ground: When an effect forces you to move -through a pull, push, or a slide-you can move 1 square less than the effect specifies. This means an effect that normally pulls, pushes, or slides a target 1 square does not force you to move unless you want to. In addition, when an attack would knock you prone, you can make a saving throw to avoid falling prone.

Heavy Blade Expertise: You gain a +2 bonus to all defenses against opportunity attacks.

Shield Push: If you hit a foe with an attack granted by your Combat Challenge class feature, you push the target 1 square after dealing damage.

With the combined might of Gedric, Drake, and one of the Rangers, three of the remaining mercenaries fall, two permanently. Valcus manages to distract a fourth from its attack on Caelen, while Rorin fails to aid in finishing off one of the remaining. One of the men Gedric had knocked to the ground sees the futility in fighting a man so strong, instead rushing towards Rorin. He doesn't find the spy any easier to hit, however.

As the men fight on, the wind continues to die down, coming to an almost complete standstill. The darkness does not cease its spread, though, finally growing dark enough to hinder vision. Farjad and Antonio are no longer in sight, nor are Captain Stroeker and his Rangers, though it is easy to remember their general positions among the trees.

Dodging away from the closing mercenary, Embla turns her gaze to the heavily weakened foe Rorin is tangled with. Forcing through the pain caused by the wounds in her side, she struggles to launch some masses of corrosive mist towards the distant man. Cursing violently as both go wide, Embla throws off the dizziness she was suffering in a fit of anger.

As the fight rages on around her, Zara stands back up from her crouched position near Natalia. A few tears can be seen streaming down her face, and her expression is one that none in the group had witnessed on her before - anger. Facing towards the gathered rangers, she rushes into the darkness and out of sight of the rest of the group.

Moments after the priestess disappears into the darkness the wind picks back up, a powerful breeze whipping up from the direction of her and the Garlanders. The sounds of body against body, and some gasps of shock, can be heard as they are apparently blasted by some concentrated gust. The sounds of their groans are accompanied by others, though the rest seem to be emanating from all directions.

The whistling of flying arrows can be heard in the distance, though no accompanying sounds of pain, suggesting the rangers fail to hit their mark. Meanwhile the veteran mercenary comes up behind his old companion who'd attacked Rorin, landing a solid blow against the man and send him collapsing to the ground in a bloody heap. "What is going on!?" he asks.

Go: Caelen

Zara: Enters Duelist's Dance stance. Moves into the darkness, towards the Garland Rangers. Roaring Storm of Cania centered on (-S, 33), targeting Garland Ranger 1 (27 vs Fortitude = hit), Garland Ranger 3 (27 vs Fortitude = hit), Garland Ranger 4 (20 vs Fortitude = hit), Garland Ranger 5 (21 vs Fortitude = hit), and Garland Ranger 6 (37 vs Fortitude = hit). Each target takes 25 cold damage and is knocked prone, as well as becoming bloodied. Garland Ranger 4 is slid to (-U, 29), Garland Ranger 6 is slid to (-U, 30), Garland Ranger 5 is slid to (-U, 31), Garland Ranger 3 is slid to (-U, 32), and Garland Ranger 1 is slid to (-R, 31).

Map Info

Darkness: The area has grown dark, though you can still see a ways into the distance without difficulty. The further from you, the harder it is to make out anyone or anything. This will hinder your ability to fight at range, as any creature not visible to you has total concealment and the associated penalty to hit.

Caelen shakes his head at Valcus, saying, "It's too late. I doubt I could keep up with them in this storm." Looking back towards his allies, his face turns to that of shock as he sees the anger painting Zara's face. The expression isn't helped as she disappears into the darkness and screams of Garland's Rangers pierce the void. Turning back to the knight, he adds, "Besides, I think we've got bigger things to worry about now."

Still attempting to shake the shock and worry out of him, the elf boy takes a step back from the downed mercenary before him and fires two arrows right at him.

Refusing to process the violence he is witnessing, Valcus' mind is a race of thoughts fighting for prominence. He struggles to parry a blow from the mercenary and the blade cuts deep, but he hardly notices. "Zara!" he cries after the priestess as she charges off into the darkness. No... I refuse to believe it. There must be another reason, he thinks to himself as he carelessly rushes away from the man engaging him. I know her. I know her, he repeats to himself, pushing away the idea.

"Zara!" Valcus calls again as he tramps through the underbrush, straining his eyes to see her. The sounds of bows twanging and strikes connecting echo out from in front of him, and he directs himself toward them. "What is this?" the knight shouts, having lost all understanding of whose side anyone is on.

"What?" Drake says aloud, confused and in shock following the turn of events. However seeing Gedric fall, he rushes towards the mercenary who dealt the blow, his sword raised. "Someone tend to Gedric," he barks as his sword connects with the mercenary. "He seems to be one of the few people we can trust at the moment."

Important Features:

Combat Superiority: You gain a bonus to opportunity attacks equal to your Wisdom modifier (+2). An enemy struck by your opportunity attack stops moving, if a move provoked the attack. If it still has actions remaining, it can use them to resume moving.

Resilience of Stone: You can use your Second Wind as an immediate interrupt when damaged by an attack.

Valcus catches sight of Zara through the darkness at the same time as he notices a familiar figure, his stomach sinking. "Night creatures!" the knight cries to every human combatant. What is she doing to the Rangers? he asks himself, hesitant to even consider the logic behind her actions.

Zara turns as Valcus calls out to her. The man can see the tears still on her face, as well as the anger clear in her eyes. She looks his way only a moment but says nothing, before return her attention to her prey.

The woman races forward towards her foes, who'd only just gotten back up from her previous assault. As she nears they all attempt, and fail, to slow her advance with makeshift attacks with their bows. Once in between the gathered mass of men, the woman's tattoos begin to glow - as the group had seen many times before - and the men around her are dragged by an unseen force to the ground at rapid speed. They don't appear to move afterwards. In a flash, the woman then vanishes into thin air, a few more sounds of shock coming from somewhere in the darkness.

As Zara continues her assault on the Garland Rangers, more of the night creatures shamble out of the darkness. They don't appear to have any particular aim, apart from moving ever closer to members of the party. More arrows can be herd zipping through the air, though again, none seem to have hit their mark.

Darkness: The area has grown dark, though you can still see a ways into the distance without difficulty. The further from you, the harder it is to make out anyone or anything. This will hinder your ability to fight at range, as any creature not visible to you has total concealment and the associated penalty to hit.

"No!" the ranger captain shouts out, as nearly half of the men he has with him are wiped out in an instant. "What is happening here? This is too much. We need to fall back," he says to his men, partially as an order, partially out of sheer panic. He and some of his fellow rangers begin to step away from the combat, continuing unsuccessfully to try to hit the Night Priestess with their arrows.

Through the darkness, the sound of shambling continues to grow. Some more of the creatures of the night step forth, in range of sight, making their way towards the party. A cry of pain can be heard from another ranger in the distance, likely a victim of another of the creatures.

Caelen's attempt to aid their new ally is unsuccessful. Almost as if in reaction to his thoughts, Drake is knocked to the ground by a powerful blow from one of the remaining mercenaries, who then approaches Caelen in preparation for a follow-up assault. The other remaining mercenary charges full force at the veteran he'd been allied with until recently, though the other man's experience shows as he is easily able to avoid the attack.

Darkness: The area has grown dark, though you can still see a ways into the distance without difficulty. The further from you, the harder it is to make out anyone or anything. This will hinder your ability to fight at range, as any creature not visible to you has total concealment and the associated penalty to hit.

Brought back to reality only by the hearing the sounds of his allies stuggling against the Serranborn mercenaries, Valcus temporarily gets over his disorientation. What madness, the knight thinks to himself as he rushes through the darkness back toward his allies, trying to get visibility of the situation.

Seeing the slumped bodies of Lord Aerden and Gedric, he lets out a growling shout as he charges toward one of the remaining enemies. Putting all of his weight into a risky move, Valcus slams one of the mercenaries in the face with his tower shield, maiming the man and causing him to fall to the forest floor. "Everybody form up on me! Circle round and protect our fallen!" he calls out through the rain and darkness, trying to bring his allies together safely.

As two men lay injured and the other rushes to their aid, things seem to only be worsening for the Garland Rangers in the darkness. As Valcus charges towards his foes he briefly stumbles, the result of a low rumbling that emanates from the distant darkness. This rumbling is immediately followed by more sounds of distress from the rangers, one of whom shouts "by the gods!" before the tell-tale sound of limp flesh hitting earth.

Rorin looks about the battlefield, swearing under his breath.
"... Damn this is not going our way. Zara, we could really use you snapping out of it if you want this woman to be ok..."
Rorin grimaces as he pulls on his crossbow, yanking the bolt back and firing at one of the mercenaries. His bolt goes wide though, and he moves past Natalia for the bushes.
Going to need to cut these Zombies up when they group together, keep them from getting to her. I'll need to surprise them though...

Fighting on despite the chaos, the veteran mercenary manages to cut down one of his old comrades. With a short break in the action he does his best to try to aid Gedric back to his feet, though it does not help. Frustrated, he turns back to face the last of the faux-Serranians, ready to put his blade through the man.

Further into the forest, Captain Stroeker and the other rangers have begun to realize the futility in trying to shoot at Zara, their shots all easily dodged by the unexpectedly agile woman. He and the others continue to fall back, the only real direction in mind being away from the woman pursuing them. As he flees the Ranger Captain manages to dispatch one of the zombies encroaching on Rorin's hiding spot.

As Caelen dispatches one of the shambling corpses, one of the Garland Rangers follows his captain towards the edge of the forest, having also seen the futility in trying to fight on any longer. The last remaining mercenary picks himself up off the ground and tries to retaliate against Valcus, though the man easily blocks the attack with his shield.

Darkness: The area has grown dark, though you can still see a ways into the distance without difficulty. The further from you, the harder it is to make out anyone or anything.

Blocking an attack from the remaining mercenary, Valcus knows he must put the man down before he can focus on aiding his compatriots. "Where is the fight left in you, sellsword? You swing like you've already left this world and turned," the knight mocks, dropping his guard to land a powerful blow to the man. He slams the flat bit of his blade against his shield, egging him on. "Bring it on!"

Taking Valcus' comments to heart, the mercenary glares and lashes out at the man once again. This proves a fatal mistake. As he swings the knight anticipates and blocks the attack, leaving the Serran man open for an attack from Caelen to the side, whose arrow brings the last of the mercenaries falling limp to the ground.

Meanwhile, in the darkness, more shouts can be heard - some the sound of men in pain, some the sounds of terror - from the Rangers still facing off against Zara. Everyone can tell that Fluffy is concerned with whatever is happening in the distance, though it obediently awaits its masters orders to investigate.

As the rumbling ground throws everyone for a few moments, Embla vanishes into the darkness, reappearing in time to send a small dark bolt through a nearby zombie's head. Seeing Fluffy's attention taken by something in the darkness, she signals that he can pursue before vanishing back into the darkness, to reappear in front of the ranger captain.

"Hi," she says, throwing a mass of what appears to be shadowy tentacles behind her, which attaches itself to another zombie's head and rips it to pieces. "Nice weather we're having tonight. Would you happen to know what that priestess is doing?"

The ranger captain scowls in response to Embla's question. "You mean apart from trying to kill me and the rest of my men?" He pushes past her, moving towards Drake and Gedric. "Leave it to me," he calls out to Rorin, after hearing the man beckoning Valcus over. "Get up and fight you lazy shits!" he shouts, directly on top of the men. "You're not dying on me here, you can do that on your own time!"

The shouting is enough to rouse the men, who are still groggy and weak from their near-death experience. As they come to, more of the rangers begin fleeing towards the group just as the remaining zombies shamble ever closer to the clustered group. One manages to sink its claws into Fluffy as he is distracted by the activity in the distant darkness.

"Glad you're here, Ranger Captain. Let's take these down and then get our wounded out of here," Valcus commands. "This one's mine," he relays after seeing the elf take down two of the creatures. With a steady pace, the knight surges through the underbrush, closing in on of them. His sword cleaves into its neck and he pulls it free, bringing his shield up and re-positioning to face another.

Combat Superiority: You gain a bonus to opportunity attacks equal to your Wisdom modifier (+2). An enemy struck by your opportunity attack stops moving, if a move provoked the attack. If it still has actions remaining, it can use them to resume moving.

Resilience of Stone: You can use your Second Wind as an immediate interrupt when damaged by an attack.

The wind continues to whip the party, as they make a comeback against the undead. Most of the remaining corpses are defeated by the surge of attacks from the group, now heartened by Drake and Gedric's recovery.

As they fight on, though, the screams and howls of pain and terror can be heard coming from the darkness. The thud of flesh hitting ground carries on the wind, the sound of another of Stoeker's rangers falling to Zara. One of the remaining men comes rushing towards the group, ready to continue onwards until safety is found.

Go: Embla, Rorin

Mechanics
[SHOW]

Caelen: hits & kills x2

Valcus: charges, hits & kills

Drake: stands, charges, hits & kills, prepares to use immediate action (see mechanics above)

Gedric: stands, waits (technically can't delay part of your turn, only the whole thing, but whatever. This time is fine since nothing is nearby anyway)

Garland Ranger 10: double-moves to (A, 34)

Garland Ranger 9: drops longbow, draws longsword. Attacks some unknown target, 12 vs AC = miss

Zara: does stuff in dark

Garland Ranger 9: is hit for 32 radiant damage and dies

Garland Ranger 8: is hit for 32 radiant damage (becoming bloodied) and is immobilized until the end of Zara's next turn.

Map Info

Darkness: The area has grown dark, though you can still see a ways into the distance without difficulty. The further from you, the harder it is to make out anyone or anything. This will hinder your ability to fight at range, as any creature not visible to you has total concealment and the associated penalty to hit.

Character Info

Embla's attack fells the last of the known night creatures, and she teleports off into the trees. When she reappears she can barely make out Zara in the distance, alone near the corpses of some of the Rangers. She does not acknowledge the woman, too focused on her foes in the distance.

Fluffy rushes towards a different section of trees as Embla allows him to do as he wishes. Shortly after he steps in that direction another thud is heard, the sound of another Ranger's demise.

"What should we do?" asks the veteran mercenary, who looks to the others - especially the noblemen - for orders.

"Are you dense? We get out of here, fast," shouts Captain Stroeker, who quickly looses an arrow towards Zara before fleeing towards the forest edge. His men continue making their way in the same direction after him, no one else making any attempts to harm the priestess.
