"Yes we need to fallback," Drake says, agreeing with the Garland Ranger Captain. "Although Natalia is still alive. Ideally we should question her, but if we can't capture her, she's do dangerous to leave alive," he says before running over to the unconscious Imardanian and Rorin.

He prepares to bring his sword down on the helpless woman, however in his haste he trips slightly and misses. "We can't let her live," he says to Rorin.

Combat Superiority: You gain a bonus to opportunity attacks equal to your Wisdom modifier (+2). An enemy struck by your opportunity attack stops moving, if a move provoked the attack. If it still has actions remaining, it can use them to resume moving.

Combat Challenge: Every time you attack an enemy, whether the attack hits or misses, you can choose to mark that target. The mark lasts until the end of your next turn. While the target is marked, it takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls if its attack doesn't include you as a target. A creature can be subject to only one mark at a time. A new mark supersedes a mark that was already in place. Whenever an enemy marked by you is adjacent to you and shifts or makes an attack that does not include you, you can make a melee basic attack against the enemy.

Encumbered Speed: You move at your normal speed even when it would be reduced by armor or a heavy load. Other effects that limit speed (such as difficult terrain or magic) affect you normally.

Stand Your Ground: When an effect forces you to move -through a pull, push, or a slide-you can move 1 square less than the effect specifies. This means an effect that normally pulls, pushes, or slides a target 1 square does not force you to move unless you want to. In addition, when an attack would knock you prone, you can make a saving throw to avoid falling prone.

Heavy Blade Expertise: You gain a +2 bonus to all defenses against opportunity attacks.

Shield Push: If you hit a foe with an attack granted by your Combat Challenge class feature, you push the target 1 square after dealing damage.

Resilience of Stone: You can use your Second Wind as an immediate interrupt when damaged by an attack.

"Agreed," Caelen responds to Drake, rushing over to the Imardanian assassin. "She's way too dangerous to keep around." Turning to face Rorin as he attempts to drag her body, the elf adds, "You didn't fight her in Violet Keep. You don't know what she's capable of. This needs to be done."

With this, Caelen carefully knocks an arrow and aims it at the woman. After a moment of concentration, he releases it, bringing the sweet kiss of death. "Your Elys won't save you now," the elf boy mutters as the life leaves Natalia's body.

"No don't!" Zara shouts out, as Drake approaches, the desperation clear in her voice. She begins to rush forward, passing Embla as she goes, tears still clear in her eyes as she does. The witch sees a ball of energy form in Zara's hand as she draws near, one very similar to the type Embla uses in combat.

Just as Caelen approaches Natalia, Zara sends the ball flying towards the boy. She is too late to prevent his attack, though, and Natalia's faint breathing slows to a halt. Immediately after the elf boy is hit with the priestess' attack, which leaves him only barely able to remain standing.

"No!" she shouts out again as the arrow pierces Natalia's flesh. The woman falls to her knees and looks on, watching as the assassin dies only yards away. "No," she says again, more faintly, as she buries her head in her hands.

Map

Map Info
[SHOW]

Trees: The vibrant green portions of the map represent tree canopies, with the black sections representing their trunks (or areas not visible due to the trunks). The areas under the canopies are traversable as normal terrain. The trunks are impassable, block line of sight and line of effect, and provide superior cover. If you are unsure of whether or not a square has enough trunk in it to be impassable, just ask.

Shrubs & Underbrush: The dark green portions of the map, which are almost the same color as the grass, are various types of undergrowth that litters the forest floor. These bushes and brambles are traversable as difficult terrain, and can obscure (but not completely block) vision. As such, they provide partial concealment to all creatures and total concealment to prone creatures.

Path: The yellow portion of the map represents the path leading through the countryside and into the woods. It is traversable as normal terrain and provides no special benefits.

Darkness: The area has grown dark, though you can still see a ways into the distance without difficulty. The further from you, the harder it is to make out anyone or anything. This will hinder your ability to fight at range, as any creature not visible to you has total concealment and the associated penalty to hit.

Character Info
[SHOW]

NPCs
Serran Veteran: Older and more battles-scarred than most of the other mercenaries, this man seems to have been through many fights in his time. Like his compatriots he wields a large falchion, though he also has a bit heavier armor in addition. Hopefully he is as skilled as he seems.

Enemies
Natalia: A ruthless killer who had posed as a noblewoman to assassinate the parents of her faux fiancee, Wilhelm von Trahl, who has now become Lord of Volberg. She wields daggers and a garrote, and based on the last fight it seems clear she utilizes poisons as well

Captain Farjad: Though clean-cut and well-dressed compared to his lackeys, Farjad appears a formidable foe. He wields two scimitars, not unlike Zara's, and his lack of scars and high position suggest he is very good at using them

Serran Mercenaries: These are apparently the best of the best of the mercenary group stationed in Greywood. Each man wields a large falchion and little armor. Some bear scars, others none, but all look like capable fighters.

"Clearly not with us," Captain Stroeker replies to Gedric, as he and his men continue to retreat towards the edge of the forest. As he does so, Fluffy rushes deeper into the woods, no longer in sight of the others in the darkness. A growl can be heard coming from the beast as it draws ever closer to whatever it is after. "If you guys want to stay here and die with the others then be my guest, but we don't plan to add to the corpses piling up."

"She was..." Zara says, quietly, as Rorin approaches. She does not look the man in the eyes, but keeps her head down towards the ground. From his low position he can see the tears falling from her eyes, dripping down to the ground below.

"She was my friend," she continues, the wind around the group beginning to die down again.

Valcus quickly steps through the brush toward where Zara and the others congregate. Taking a knee, he puts his hand on her shoulder. "Zara... what was that? And how do you know this woman?" he asks, unable to understand the situation. She is out of her mind, the knight thinks. She attacked the boy, as well. Was this woman a night priestess as well? Perhaps she betrayed Zara.

Turning to face Drake, the elf boy nods, saying, "Yeah, I don't think I could take another one of those blasts anyways." With this, he retreats back slightly and takes the opportunity to recover from the energy ball the "priestess" had struck him with.

Zara shakes Valcus' hand off her as he approaches. Still not looking up at the gathered party members, she continues her faint speaking. "She was my friend... you killed her." Her words are interspersed with sniffles and the sounds of her sobbing.

As the wind slows even more, a high-pitched yelp emanates from the trees. It comes from the darkness Fluffy had run off in, and Embla can feel her connection with the beast severed. The quiet stillness that comes with the fading of the wind reveals a low growling sound coming from the same direction.

Something changes in the air around you. In her emotionally-vulnerable state you can sense that there is a powerful magical aura emanating around Zara, one significantly more powerful than your own, the one you sensed around Antonio, or even the one that had emanated from the Witch of the forest. The last time you've felt an aura this powerful was during the event that gave you Fluffy. There is now no doubt in your mind that the magical effects at play - the weather in particular - are her doing. A magical presence also emanates from the direction Fluffy had been heading in, one that only now has come to your attention. The sounds coming from its direction remind you of the sounds you heard the other night, in the forest behind the castle, as well as the previous night on the road to Greywood.

Assassin's Bane: in this zone, enemies can't shift, teleport or benefit from invisibility or partial/total concealment. Represented by a blue translucent square on the map.

"Pouvay repose pay dan mason geese? What?" Embla says, confused by the misplaced and unfamiliar words. "You're easier to understand when you speak a langu-"

Suddenly distracted from her monologue, Embla's head snaps towards the direction Fluffy ran off, her eyes widening as she first senses the powerful aura coming from that direction before she snapping back to Zara, face slowly paling in disbelief. Stumbling back, she quickly takes distance from the kneeling figure and runs behind Drake and Caelen.

Not a good sign. We gotta move.
He bends down to a knee next to Zara, looking at her.
"Zara... I know you're upset, but I have to ask if you can move... I'll carry Natalia out myself if I have to, for you, but you have to help me, ok?... We can't stay here. Considering Drake's words carefully, Gedric replies "If you're intent on throwing out these Imardains out of our homeland, then I'd be intent on joining you."

Turning to face the bodies of his former comrades, whom he had slain, he spat, "And good riddance to these sad sacks."

"She was my friend and you killed her!" Zara shouts in response to the gathering party members, aimed more at Rorin, who'd been doing the most talking. "Don't touch her!" she shouts again as he approaches the body, raising her head towards the man. The redness in her eyes is apparent, as are the tears on her cheeks. Her voice, however, has elevated from quiet grief to anger. "I will bury her myself! You won't get a burial!"

Further towards the edge of the woods the last of the rangers flee out of earshot, too concerned with getting away than they are with trying to continue to convince the others to do the same. "I'm sure the rest of our company - the non-Imardanians, that is - will be firmly on your side from here on out," the veteran replies. "At least as soon as we have a new leader." He looks on and listens to the shouting coming from the distance, before adding, "assuming we get out of this alive."

"Zara," Valcus says firmly, but calmly. "Listen to me -- please."

The knight stands up, looking her in the eyes. "Your friend was behind the tragedies at the Violet Keep. We tried to help her, but she hurt us, Zara. She almost killed us. I won't cast judgement on how or why you've an attachment to her, but you have to understand our side of things and why we did what we did."

Valcus turns, looking back at the others for a moment, before facing Zara again. "Now, please, how can I help you? Do you want some time alone with her? Or perhaps we can provide her proper burial together? Do not forget about Inara and what she has tasked you with doing. After that, we all need to leave these woods, find a place to let things settle over a hot meal, and we can sort things out."

"It's coming for you, not me," Zara responds. "Forget Inara. There is no Inara. There is only la déesse. If you're lucky, you'll get to meet her!" As the priestess shouts at Rorin and Valcus, the sounds of footsteps are heard coming through the darkness. Soon, the source of the footsteps - and of Embla's worries - comes into view.

Standing over seven feet tall, and walking straight towards the party, is a large humanoid creature. It resembles the night creatures somewhat, except that its insides appear to be on fire. This fire is visible glowing through its skin for most of its body, though towards its hands, mouth, and eyes the fire burns trough the skin and wraps around its bony extremities.

Valcus' focus is shaken when he sees the terrible creature approaching from behind. "I didn't want to believe it," he says aloud, though mostly to himself. Fear and anger, among other emotions, paint his face in deep lines of anguish. "Why, Zara? Is that even your name?" the man shouts through tears as he futilely lashes out at her with his bastard sword.

Almost impaired from the scene, the knight takes a step back, closer to the creature, but keeps his reddened eyes upon the woman's visage. We have to get out of here. Have to escape her and that thing.

After a series of interpersonal drama that Gedric was clearly not up to speed on, he saw a situation he finally understood: An enemy began pursuit.

"Sers, I believe it best if we regroup a bit before taking that...thing down." Gedric states, trying to appear resolved.

"Do we just go back to town? Can we trust the rest of the mercenaries there? Do you have any other alternatives?" Gedric inquires as he quickly relocates to a safer distance.

As the group begins to flee the veteran mercenary looks around to the others and takes in the situation. Disregarding Drake's order, he brandishes his blade and rushes towards the fiery creature.

Assassin's Bane: in this zone, enemies can't shift, teleport or benefit from invisibility or partial/total concealment. Represented by a blue translucent square on the map.

Valcus' tears are returned by Zara, whose face is now a mix of anger and sadness. She stands as she easily avoids his attacks, before shoving him forcefully backwards. She rushes past him, not responding to him, and makes her way to Natalia's still-warm corpse and kneels down beside it, bursting into a fit of sobbing once more.

As Zara is mourning her friend, the fiery creature lashes out at the Serran veteran with a powerful attack. The man is staggered by the impact, but stays standing firm, preparing his own counter-attack.

With most of his allies retreating into safety, Valcus realizes he is getting left behind. He sees the veteran land a solid blow on the hardy minion and that Zara is seemingly pacified by tending to the woman's body. Deciding that he needs to escape, but not ready to let the veteran throw himself into danger alone, the knight charges forward, landing a crippling blow on the minion, hoping to maim it.

Rorin pauses and hesitates as he sees Valcus engage the minion. He looks from Valcus and the veteran, to Zara, over to those fleeing, then curses himself and rushes over to the minion, trying to drive his dagger into it.
"Alright, would the two honorable warriors trying to sacrifice their lives pointlessly please get the hell out of here?! There are people back in the town that will need BOTH of your asses, and I can outrun you both any day or night, so for the love of the gods, get out of here!"

Caelen follows after Embla, the two making their way to a safer distance from the creature. As he flees, Zara continues to ignore the others, too focused on her friend. She slowly, and with some difficulty, lifts the body of Natalia and begins to carry it in the direction that Antonio and Farjad had fled in.

Though Zara is preoccupied, her summoned beast is not. Rising to its feet, it stares down at the veteran mercenary before striking at him with a powerful blow. The man reels and nearly collapses, but remains standing. He is clearly very injured at this point.

Valcus, Rorin
[SHOW]

As Drake and Gedric join the others out of sight, fleeing from the field of battle, Zara continues to slowly make her way into the darkness with the body of her friend. She does not watch as Rorin and the veteran try, and fail, to wound the beast, or as Valcus makes his escape. She likewise does not watch as the beast's retaliation brings the Serran man to the ground. "Get... out of here," are his final words as he chokes on his own blood, joining his old comrades as just another body.

Those who've fled far enough for the fighting to no longer be visible find themselves meeting up with the Ranger Captain a ways down the road. He is alone and seems to be waiting for you. "Right behind us... Hopefully," Drake replies as he catches his breath, hoping the groan was that of Zara's minion. "Thank you for the help, we wouldn't have even lasted that long without you and the rangers showing up. Speaking of, I'm sorry about your men. We had no idea the Priestess was capable of such things."

Drake, Caelen, Embla, Gedric
[SHOW]

"Who could have? That is... unnatural. If she is allied with the invaders then we need as many men as we can get." He turns to face where the others still fight on as he hears the groan and the collapse. "I have to go back to Garland to fetch the others."

Valcus curses through gritted teeth as he sees the Serran sellsword cut down at a glance over his shoulder. "Rorin! Move!" the knight roars, continuing down the path toward safety. Zara will pay for this, he thinks grimly.

Valcus, Rorin
[SHOW]

As the two of you flee you are briefly far enough that the creature is no longer in sight. However, it is not long before it once more comes into view, rushing towards Rorin.

Go: Valcus, Rorin

Mechanics
[SHOW]

Valcus: runs

Rorin: moves

Zara: does stuff in the dark

Zara's Minion: moves into view at (D, 26)

Map
[SHOW]

Map Info

Assassin's Bane: in this zone, enemies can't shift, teleport or benefit from invisibility or partial/total concealment. Represented by a blue translucent square on the map.

Drake nods in agreement. "And let us hope the Imardanians are running out of tricks. Although judging by the last couple of weeks, I fear they have yet more treachery in store for us," he says, thinking back to the events in both Garland and the Violet Keep.
